High-Speed USB hub?

I just reinstalled XP and got a message re my external hard drive that I've never gotten before - I've had the drive for almost 2 years.

"High-Speed device plugged into non-High-Speed USB hub"

I know enough to know what this is telling me, but not enough to know what to do about it!:-o

From what I can tell I don't really have a lot of options as to where I can plug in the the cable I am using.....

    Thanks!

This post really didn't make much sense or have a specific point - I'm sorry.

How do I tell the difference between a high-speed hub and a non-high-speed hub?

How do I know whether or not I'm using the correct cable?

Using this external drive has become incredibly slow and anything I can do to speed it up would be awesome!

    Thanks :)

USB 2 says Enhanced Host controller when you open device manager.
Check the USB ports in your computer and plug the external directly into one of them. Does it complain? Try more than one port because sometimes, probably to save money, a motherboard will have USB 1.1 and 2.

I have 4 ports, none of them are labeled.

I get the same message with all of them.

Attachment is what Device Mgr says.

    I have service pack 3.

So, I either need the correct driver or I need to put USB 2 ports in?

Will any computer support USB 2? Mine is pretty old, well....really old in computer years.:-o

What should my next step be?

    Thanks!

do you know if you had the same problem before you reinstalled xp?

usb 2 is sorta old now, so chances are you have it, you just need the proper drivers. you can run everest and get a hardware report to see what type of motherboard/computer you have and we can try and help you get the chipset drivers for it. unfortunately I will be on vacation for a week so hopefully someone else will be able to help you out.

thesmokingun - thanks for your help and have fun on vacation!

I didn't notice it before reinstalling xp......but that may be me just not noticing it:-o

I printed out a bunch of info with Belarc Advisor before reinstalling - would that have what I need on it or should I still do Everest?

    Thanks!!

Would this be a safe download?

I keep getting an error message about one of my external drives ever since reinstalling xp. It was suggested in the Hardware forum that I might need new chipset drivers.

    Would this download work?

    Thanks!!:)

    Hi

NO, on the driver detective type application, IMHO they cause more issues than they fix as many drivers are custom specified by many of the OEMS like DELL, HP etc and a unified driver may not work on all the various builds of motherboards.

So as mentioned some info would be good to help you and follow the below to gain us a log of your PCs specs, as the only thing missing as an ethernet driver, the Chipset driver looks already installed as you have no device issues with the types of things a missing chipset woudl list, and as you mention your PC is really old, sadly it may not support USB2.0 at all but the below info will help check this.

Its possible you could add a PCI USB2.0 card, if you have PCI slots spare.

    Thanks!

My computer is an HP Pavilion a384x.

I printed out a bunch of stuff before I reinstalled Windows, is this what you need?

Main circuit board : ASUSTeK Computer INC. A7N8X-LA Rev1.xx

    Thanks again:)

PS I will do the Everest thing - be back soon to post it.

your everest report shows that you have usb 2...do you have the drive plugged into a usb port on the front of the computer? or in the back, near the keyboard/mouse ports? It could be that the ports in the front of the case do not support usb 2.0 but the rear ones do. I've had a computer that was like that.

Nope, it's plugged into the back. I use the fronts for my camera, could it be the other way around, the fronts are USB 2.0? Are the ports labeled in any way? I'll try it out and let you know.

    Thanks!

OK, two things, the first pretty embarassing - right on the front two ports it says in very clear noticeable type : USB 2.0 :-orolleyes

BUT...I still get the message when I plug my drive in either of these :confused

    Thanks again!

    Hi

Download and install the Chipset for that motherboard in the nForce2 reboot and then try the USB

Thank you so much Halo - I downloaded, installed, was prompted to restart, said yes, the computer restarted, I plugged my drive in and got a pop up telling me the device could perform faster if I plugged it into a USB 2.0 hub......:cry

I kept all the pre-checked options during installation, hopefully that was OK.

I also tried uninstalling all the hubs/ports (earlier today, before installing the new driver). That didn't work either - should I try that again though since installing the new driver?

    Thanks for your patience!:)

    Hi

You could try that with the hubs and ports and also open device manager up and have none of your USB items plugged in and then plug one it and plug in the external drive and open the Universal Serial Bus Controllers branch and then look for USB Mass Storage Device, this will be your USB external, and rigth click and choose Uninstall, then unplug when its finished and then just plug it back in, XP may just be thinking that its still listing as a USB1.1 device.

Do also let us know of any yellow ! marks in device manager or messages associated mesages with the port the USB drive is plugged into (will be the Mass driver one)

Do you have any issues with any other USB device, printer, usb pen, mouse etc?

I think that did it Halo, thanks - you da GEEK!! Unless I somehow clicked to not show me the popup anymore, I'm able to plug the drive into any of the ports and not get the message. Woot and thanks again:)

    Hi

Great stuff and cheers for posting back, its possible to check what USB controller is being used (I think) in Everest (beta demo)unzip the folder and run the Everest file *the icon with i in it, not the Everest Start one* then click Devices > USB Devices and then look down the list for your External HDDs name and then look at what Controller branch its coming off, if it mentiones Enhanced Controller then its USB2.0

This is mine below, maybe a tad different on your PC as I'm using a very new motherboard and Windows 7

    Thanks again Halo!
