I lost Wins XP Pro for some unknown reason. It would not bring up the desktop on start up. So I installed Kubuntu because the wins recovery CD keep telling me that it could see my HD. I hope someone can tell me how to do this.I partion Kubuntu to 20gb leaving me w/ 60gb for windows.

When it ask for password I can't post the request for some reason. This version of Kubuntu I am running is 6.10 which is out dated. I have a newer version coming (09). I would think that I should be able to post password you think?

the password should be your normal user password - the one you made at set-up

I finally got it to see and except my password. Here are the results below. As I said wins does not see my HD.

i'm a little confused about this,
at the moment you do not have any windows partitions on your hard drive

so what are you exactly trying to do ?,

are you trying to dual boot - using 20gb for kubuntu and 60gb for xp,

if you are then i suggest installing xp first,
use your xp cd to delete the partitions and create a 55000mb partition, format it to NTFS and install xp to it,

when your new kubuntu cd arrives install it to the unallocated/free space on your hard drive (should be around 25000mb in size),

windows will/should be automatically be added to the grub boot menu

Sorry, the first quote should have said Wins did not see the HD. I was told by someone to install Kubuntu 1st because it would form the partition 1st, then I could add the wins to the other Partition. Thanks for the advice.

XP needs to be on the first partition. The later operating systems aren't as fussy.

The fact that you installed Kubuntu, wiped out your windows partition.

Sometimes, you can use a Live CD of linux to try and repair windows but you do not install linux in this case.

If you have a recovery CD that depends on a hidden partition of your hd to work, you've just made the recovery CD useless.

What brand and model of computer do you have so we can look and see what sort of recovery options came with your computer.

It is a MSI K8MM-V Series Micro-ATX Mainboard. Model #K8MM-V (ms-7142) Series. I hope this helps. Also I have a failing PSU that might be the issue. PSU Fan is making a lot of noise and is struggling.

plodr: You think tha i have shot my in the foot and allowed Kubuntu to eliminate Xp's Partion?? THis PSU sound like its getting weaker. A weak PSU could be the one that started the crash. I have a new PSU coming tommorow. I hope this sloves part of my problems.

I hope I'm wrong but it sure seems like that's what you've done; overwritten XP with Kubuntu.

I wanted to install Ubuntu to my slave drive and told it to partition it. Ubuntu said I needed to reboot and when I did, it started overwriting my master hd. Fortunately, I had an image so I could restore windows but my mbr was gone and I need to repair that. If the Kubuntu installer is like the Ubuntu installer, then the same thing might have happened to you - it did what it wanted and not what you told it to do.

This issue is still unresolveable because Wins Recovery CD does not recognize my HD. It seems that XP can't see SATA HD drivers. I have given up on WINS and will accept Ubuntu as my sole OS. I like it much better than XP. The only thing I will miss w/ XP is playing games on the game websites. Someday I might be able to work around that. THaks for all your posts.

You can install XP as a virtual machine if your processor has the firepower.

I have decided to give XP the boot (kick it out) and keep Ubuntu. XP has too many issues to contend with. Besides it is not friendly w/ SATA Drives. Manufacture did not set BIOS to SATA but set it totally to IDE Drives. THis is why the XP recovery cd won't restore wins xp. I would have to reset the sata jumpers to delete the IDE and reformat to SATA. TO ME WINS IS NOT WORTH THE TROUBLE. With Ubuntu I have a much smother running PC without the worry that wins gave me.
