I'm trying to reinstall AVG ( on my friends computer) but something is preventing it. Windows Virus Protection is ON but I want to turn it off, however there is nothing in the Security Center that allows this. I can turn off the firewall but not VP.
    Thanks

News to me that Windows has virus protection. Are you sure it's Windows and not the BIOS, or a third party firewall?

I've just realised it's probably Windows Live OneCare you are referring to, a paid for security suite from Microsoft and not part of Windows. If that's the case it already includes AV protection, and you should only run one AV program at a time.

So if that's the case installing AVG is not a good idea.

It's not Live Care - since posting I get the feeling that this is a Trojan. Both Spybot and Malware Bytes have found dozens of Trojans - one of them was called Win32.FakeAlert - so that is probably what was causing the problem./
However, that said, AVG will still not reinstall, Ad_Aware will not work, Java will not install updates - I have my friend (who owns the computer) running each of a squared, spybot, and malware bytes over and over till they don't find anymore problems. Hopefully then I can reinstall everything.

Unfortunately there is currently no Anti-Virus on the computer because they won't install.

if you go into your security center and it say's that the virus protection is on ,if you click on it, it will collapse down and tell you what virus protection is running then you will know where to go to switch it off or uninstall the virus protection software.

If you would like help with this system in getting rid of the malware, I suggest you follow this guide:

Thanks: This is exactly what it was and I already used Malware Bytes with great success. I've reinstalled or corrected most of the non-working problems (still have to reinstall Java) and it seems to be working well.

Because it worked so well I also decided to try Malware Bytes on my own computer and found a bunch of relatively mild infections - so this has been an amazing tool.

    Thanks so much

Thanks I didn't know that the Security Center would do that
