This time it's my 9 year old son. He was feeling listless yesterday and we just figured that he was tired because of the swimming party he went to. He had no temp. This morning, he woke up saying that his head hurt and his stomach too. I took his temp and it was 102.3. We took him right then and there to his doctor and, as it turned out, he has the Swine Flu. Bless his little heart, he is really sick and I just feel so helpless knowing there's nothing I can do. The doctor told us that it's better he got the Swine Flu as opposed to the other strain that's going around, which is supposed to be even worse. Well, I need to get back to my little buddy, I promised I'd watch 'Icarly' with him.

Oh, Stubby! :cry I hope he is OK.... YES, better that one than the other... I just got word that a friend of a friend in Israel got the 'other' one, and she was 26 and healthy, and passed away last night... Truely a bad one indeed..

You take care of your little one, and I hope he gets better soon.. How about some popsicles? :yum Surely, that should help a little... We're praying for ya bud!

Hey Stubby I'm sorry to here of the boy's illness. Children are resilient and come back fast. The (Prayer Warrior):major has come on Duty and is praying already.

Just had to take my oldest grand daughter to the hospital for a head ache that's been hanging around for several weeks. She got 2 shots of steroids to make it go away for a day or two until she sees her doc, and we were on our way home and she said it started to come back. Not as strong this time. She's suppose to ware glasses but doesn't. The bad thing is she's an avid reader BUT, without the glasses.Plus a lot of major stress at her home.

@ TeeCee Sorry to here of the lost. I hope your friend is handling it ok.Give my regards.

Well, after an extremely restless night, we finally got him to sleep around 2A.M.! He woke about an hour ago and his fever was alot more acceptable, 99.8. That 'Tamiflu' sure knocked it down. Granted, he's still one sick 'little puppy' but that medicine sure is helping.

Now, as for 'ICarly!' Well, it is a cute show, but after 7 episodes in a row, some of the 'cuteness' wears off;) Now, as my son has informed me, there is going to be an 'ICarly' marathon this evening with 14 episodes in a row:cry 7 on one channel and 7 on the other and, lucky me, when the first 7 ends, we'll switch channels for 7 more!! Just how much 'cuteness' can one man handle:confused:-D

I have only one request for the 'Prayer Warrior.' With your connections, do you think you could talk the Man upstairs into making it rain so hard down here that we would lose out satelite signal. Honestly, I'm doing it for my son because he needs his rest and, besides, I really don't think I can handle 14 episodes of 'ICarly' in one sitting. Man, that IS 7 hours of 'cuteness!!' NO man should be made to endure that!!:-D

Glad to hear the fever is down and he's feeling better. Good news.

There have been TONS of articles and segments on this flu today!

    Hi

First off sorry to hear of any illness and a death, so speedy recovery of your son Stubby and condolences TeeCee.

But while I cannot check this week as not in work, what new strain of Influenza is this "other one" ? up until last friday all I knew we where on alert with was H1N1 SwineFlu (although they renamed it "novel H1N1" to try and stop the potential exodus from eating pork) which sadly seems to target health and young!! as I get our internal sitrep and DoH updates daily in some cases but weekly in email since this broke out in Mexico.

H5N1 Bird Flu, while on alert is not flagging up as much outside China, Vietman or Egypt, just hope this one is not making a resurgence as coupled with Swine, Bird and Seasonal strains of H3N2, we in for a bad winter.

Honestly Halo, I have no idea what the 'other' strain is, but from Zach's doctors remarks it appears to be somewhat more serious. If I would have been thinking, I would've asked, but the second he said Zach had Swine Flu, I focused on him and everything else went blank.

Halo, is it possible for the Swine Flu to have different strains? Some more serious than the others? If so, maybe that's what the doctor was referring to? I think I'll try and find some of those articles that Laura mentioned so I can at least have some basic knowledge on this.

    Hi Stubby

Only correct your mind was elsewhere and rightly so, and good that Zach is responding the the meds. Its possible as feared it may mix with a seasonal flu and/or other nasty strain going around, also it could mutate from original strain as its gone global so mixed with other cultures and virii, it may.

Dont also think enough is known about this strain as it seems to not majorly affect the very young and older groups as seasonal flu does but in alot of cases the fit and well, does seem though from what I have read that in the deaths from H1N1 an underlying medical condition has made the virus worse, but who knows.

As many of us are heading out of summer and into winter, its bug season, so best to be prepared, with some essential stocks (water, headache meds etc)

Thanks Halo, I truly do appreicate your input and your time to explain some of this to me.;) At least now I'm not totally lost when it comes to this kind of stuff. I'm no expert either, but at least I understand more than what I did before. Thanks again Halo!

    Hi Stubby

I'm no expert on this stuff also, but fortunatly I get loads of info and documents that the general public dont get, and have read loads on this of late, as down other end of the research floor I work on is infectious diseases dept! so want to know what I'm letting myself infor every day.

I think in the end we are all in the hands of the virus, no matter if your an expert in virology, you cannot 100% predict what this things going to do, just think this years flu season is not going to be a goodun.

Hi Stubby, good to hear your little patient is responding to the meds.. Excellant! :strong warriors on the job!

My friend's friend had the H1N1, and lived in Israel. That one sounds awful scary too... Halo has some very good info there..;)

I remember back when the "Hong-Kong" flu went around, there was a lot of people sick with that one.. I think Halo is onto something there, that it mutates, and gets worse as time goes on.....

I hope he continues getting better, Stubby.... Yes, :strong warriors work on anything you may need! ;)

Oh no! To both the swine flue AND iCarly! LOL Glad he's getting to feeling better, and that you got him to the doc early enough to get him on meds pronto. Positive thoughts and energy from me to both of you. Give him a hug for me, and good luck with the TV watching. :-D

Well, the little guy got up this morning and the first thing out of his mouth was, "I want some waffles, I'm hungry!" When he finished eating ALL the waffles, he went to his computer and started playing his favorite race car game!! I'd say that the worst is over:celebrate What a hectic couple of days. I told him that now that he's feeling a LOT better he can go to school tomorrow and I got the typical 9 year old answer, 'I'm not really that well yet, maybe we should wait a few more days until I get better':-D Actually, the kid's got a point, I'm not letting him go back until the doctor says he can, just to be on the safe side!

I want to thank you all for your thoughts and prayers for my son. You'll never know how much I appreicate them. To some they may just be typed words on a faceless forum, but what makes them so special is the people that typed them and the feelings and concern those people have for a child they never even met. Again, thank-you all so much!;)

Now for my rant!! I am damn sick and tired of all this 'fear mongering' the media is putting out about the Swine Flu. Saying that they expect 90,000 children and young people to die from this strain in the coming months! And then reporting that the vaccine may be put out even though there is NO proof of it's effectivness. No, I'm not trying to lessen the severity of the Swine Flu, it is a bad one. But at a time when people need some kind of hope, the media comes with all this negative garbage and scaring the hell out of people for NO good reason. Sure, people need to be warned, but not scared to death!!

Now, PapaDuke!! I honestly do appreicate your FIRST post, however, your second needs some help:-D It's funny, I was trying to think of ways of getting out of watching 'iCarly' then, for some reason, the song 'Cats In The Cradle' came to mind and I realized that I was passing up some real quality time with my son. Needless to say, I watched all 14 episodes of 'iCarly' and even though I don't particulary care for the show, the time I spent with my Buddy was priceless. I guess that's what they call 'making memories,' huh?!

I just found out about your son Stubby, poor little guy.
Lots of people (youngsters) that have had it said it's no different then flus they have had before. So that's going to be what I pray for.
I have no idea what Icarly is, sound good I don't from everyone else.
    Hope he's feeling better today

Glad to read that your son is on the mend, Stubby. There are a lot of nasty Flu strains around over here, too, (winter-time here).

TeCee - So sorry for the sad loss of your friend:(. You're right that the 'Swine Flu' is bad, but not as bad as some of the others going around, (e.g. H1N1).

The war of the viruses, (of the medical kind) is a never ending one, with constant mutations. They are the micro equivalent of the Borg, of Star Trek fame.
