Initial problem: F-secure message: Malicious code found in c:\windows\system32\ws2_32.dll.

Infection : Trojan.win32.Patched.hg; F-secure is unable to remove the infection

    Symptoms:
Unable to open most programs; error message: The application failed to initialize (0xc0000022) including f-secure and cannot access the internet. Recent history of the machine being 'buggy'; slow running, error messages, slow and unreliable internet connection, frequent trojan attacks caught by f-secure.

Results of XP cleaning procedures from READ AND RUNME:

NB – As I am unable to open F-secure, it was not possible to disable it during the following scans.

1.Super antispyware – unable to install. Error message: The application failed to initialize (0xc0000022). I've tried renaming it, but the same message results. I have not tried in safe mode as the documentation advises that it will not install in safe mode.
2.Malware Bytes – Updated manually, ran, nothing found. Log attached.
    3.Combofix – Log attached
    4.Root Repeal – Log attached
    5.MGTools – Log attached

    Other scans:

Ad-aware – only found tracking cookies, which were duly removed
Kapersky Virus Removal Tool – identified Trojan.win32.Patched.hg but was unable to disinfect

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please remove MGtools.exe from the below location which is not where we asked you to save it to.
    C:\Documents and Settings\beth.JON-CDESKTOP\My Documents\Malware suite\MGtools.exe

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 15
    Java(TM) 6 Update 2
    Java(TM) 6 Update 3
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment
Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Firstly, thank you very, very much for helping us.

    OK:
MGTools moved, sorry about that, I knew I'd get something wrong!
    Redundant Java versions uninstalled.
Combofix script appeared to run successfully, log attached.
CCleaner ran on all user accounts, including administrator.
    Latest Java version installed.
    GetLogs.bat ran, log attached.

Computer appears to be much better; F-Secure is now working, internet access is restored, I can now install programmes and all applications are available.

BUT, I'm not sure that the computer is clean. I ran a full scan with F-Secure (Log attached), which identified 1 instance of Trojan.win32.agent.aykf, and I cannot see that this has been disinfected or quarantined from the log. It also identified six instances of the initial Trojan.win32.patched.hg, three of which appear to have been quarantined by combofix , the other three are hiding in system restore files. I've had pop-ups from F-Secure claiming to be blocking Trojan.win32.patched.hg; apparently from the system restore files. I've selected the 'quarantine' option as 'disinfect' failed.

I also ran a scan with Kapersky Virus Removal Tool, and installed and ran SAS which have not identified any threats.

It would be great if you could review the logs to see if we need to do anything further. Thanks again for your time, we really appreciate being thrown a life-line by knowledgable folk.

You should not be running anything but what we ask you to run since we are not finished yet. You also installed Digital Patrol 5 which we did not ask you to install. As stated in the READ & RUN ME, once you start the cleaning process, you must only do what we ask you to do. Otherwise you cause confusion and cause things to take longer to analyze. In addition, you could cause problems we cannot fix.

Mostly all F-Secure is finding is things we already quarantined/deleted and that your antivirus program never fixed to begin with while you were really infected.

You should just delete the one file mention which must contain the javascript being flagged. Delete this file: C:\Documents and Settings\l

And then empty your Recycle Bin to remove it permanently.

    You're logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

OK. All done, sorry for getting things wrong (again). It must be exasperating when people continually fail to follow your (very clear) instructions, sorry about that!

We've followed all your instructions and no longer have any problems, and have hopefully improved our security as well. Once again, many thanks for your prompt and knowledgable replies.
