Not me personally. My grand father who passed away a couple of months ago was very, very close to Mother Theresa. Industrial sized tiffens - collected untouched, fresh food left over at the Oberio and hyatt chain of hotels in Delhi. This was delivered to the Missionaries of Charity Homes in Delhi daily

On his birthday we'd have 400 kids from various orphanages for breakfast and lunch. Food was cooked at home!
Being the 26 of Jan and the Indian republic day, was a treat for all the kids to see the parade march by as well.

Now my parents carry on with his ways and habits.

Have lovely personal letters from Mother T to him..

    I miss him..

I help set up, run, and tear down our Festival of the Arts every June. Basically taking one weekend a year to do for free what I do for a living to support local arts groups (which account for about 1/3 of my wages annually).

I used to be very active in both my local and state Union Label Councils, but after a falling-out with the woman who runs both I have had to step away. If anyone ever pries the reins from her fingers I'll be back.

Most everything else I do is very localized, but could happen anywhere. I spend time in my local community theatres making sure the next generation comes up knowing how to work backstage, help out at the annual Labour Day celebration, and am often on the organizing committee for whatever social/celebratory event my union local might be planning.

I go see kids that are disabled to the point that they may spend the rest of their lives in wheelchairs and many are mentally disadvantaged too. When I wheel up in my hotrod:)-D) they immediately open up to me, especially when we have a chair race down the hallways and leave skid marks on the floor to the chagrin of the maintenance folks, squealing and giggling like fools!

It's the highlite of my month.:)

tony, we live worlds apart. In India food, even uncooked - rice, lentils, flour etc go a long, long way. A close second is clothes, simply to cover one. Blankets for the winters to wrap around. We managed to get a lot sponsored by simple persuasion. Its easier than convincing for cash. Clothes & Blankets that failed QA got collected. Had quintals of rice, sugar, flour, Tea leaves etc at home. Next day gone!

Remember as a kid going with my cousins and granddad out early in the winter mornings to distribute 100's of blankets. Use to be in 4-5 open SUVs and almost got mobbed.

hey, hey, hey, why are we barred? I don't "photochop"..... I don't even have the program for it.. Man, what did I do?????? :cry

I collect hats and send them on to kids who are going thru Chemo and are losing their hair... It gives them a little boost, helps them get thru another day..... Puts a smile on their faces.... I don't ask for any $$$ form anyone.. Just a hat... I have gotten TONS of positive feedback from the hospital on it too.. "Good Carma" they said, is always appreciated... :heart

    Hi Tony

this sounds like a great idea. What sort of response have you had to it? How large is the area from where you get responses? ie Population <200 or >2000? Is it for the benefit of just the local Hall or other groups also.

OK, Tony, but you will have to give me some time to upload some.;)

I also help with the local Volunteer Fire Dept. They are all Volunteers, so when they are called out on a cold night, I and another lady will go to the firehall and make sure they have hot coffee and a munchies when they return.

None of them get paid, and when they are working on a wildfire, we take them refreshments, because fighting fires is HOT work, be it summer or winter..... I do this as it is needed, anytime it is needed...

What about me can I join:hyper. I don't photochop. What's that mean anyway?-D Seriously is this something for your local area or can anyone do this. I've just bought a new camera and have gone crazy taking pics.

I use to volunteer for the volunteer fire dept in Davie Fl years ago, it was really rewarding.Volunteered for the city where I use to work helping in the Discovery Science Center of Ocala. A lot went on there,we did events like farmers week were we would find antiques of all kinds write up a little info on what, where and when it was made/created & used for.Another was star gazing, set up tents near the buildings and they would bring out some huge scopes to look at the heavens. Also helped with the Hot Shots fire fighters when we had some really bad fires here. That was really educational to me.
The rest of my volunteering was helping out those who had less than I and just having a shoulder to lean on is to me better then anything.I'm a real good listener. I just like to here others talk about there lives.

Volunteers, huh? Well, my wife, son and I all volunteer at A.R.F. (Animal Rescue Fund) which a shelter for abused, neglected and unwanted animals...it's a 'no-kill' shelter. My wife designed, built and maintains and updates their website at her own expense. My son and I walk, feed and take care of the animals and I, with a few others, make sure the animals that need medication get it. We just started building another building (heated and cooled) that will house another 45 animals. Below is a link to their site and on the right side you'll see something new my wife added, a dedication and memorial page and if you go there, my wife posted 2 pictures of Bailey, the German Shepard that I had to put to sleep recently. Here's the link; http://www.arfms.com/ BTW, if you go to the volunteers page, my son is the one with the little brown\white puppy!

Tony, for future reference: Smileys are used to denote when you joke. If you plan to make jokes like these in the future, use the smileys so it's obvious that it's just a joke. That way, your only crime will be that you have absolutely no tact or sense of humor. Without smileys your statement becomes a serious one, and you come across as a sexist douchebag.

    Hi tony

I thought perhaps your village sounded reasonably populated. My nearest town has only around 300-400 persons. We have a local hall, fire brigade, CWA, Quilters, Church groups, golf and tennis club, school, pre-school and general store. We have a bi-yearly country fair, consisting of Stall holders - selling and/or displaying items, donated items are usually sourced from businesses and raffled or auctioned off. Kids games and competitions and some sort of Art/craft displays. As it's combined effort usually all groups get a share of profits. Usually you can get some start up money from the local council to help and then that is repaid to them before your left with your profits. Often time businesses will readily assist more if you suggest a I'll buy one if you donate two deal to them.

Generally throughout the year, we try organise morning Tea's or discussion groups on topics like - Health, Financial planning, touring local spots of interest, genealogy, dancing. In about 2 months we're running a shopping bus tour. Although we're small our demographic ranges from babies to shut-in's also.

    Hi Paramonks
Sounds like you’ve got beautiful community there, We do pretty much the same here, we will be holding an afternoon tea in the hall next Sunday, things like this usually raise about £200, but its not all about money, getting people together is, as far as I’m concerned more important,
Good idea buy 1 and donates 2. defiantly going to try that one. Financial planning sounds as if it might go down nicely as well
I’ve got an application in for 12 laptops; if we are successful I will include Genealogy in the classes.
This is exactly why I started this thread; so, thank you very much for the feedback
