I hope this is the right forum. I apologize if it's not.

My friend told me a few days ago that their computer would not start up. I finally had the chance to go down there and see what was wrong today.

The system will start up normally but about 15 seconds after the desktop appears it will lock up and restart. Safe mode works fine though. I disabled restarting on failure and was presented with this lovely stop error.

    Code:
    STOP: 0x0000008E (0xc0000005, 0x8062DFCF, 0xF4B7C96C, 0x00000000)
I don't know where to go from here. All I knew to try was a clean boot and I still got the same error.

Getting any information on the computer or the error could take a few days. All I took from it today was a dxdiag report. I probably should've brought the damn thing home with me. :-o

    Any help is appreciated.

i think this usually refers to a hardware issue, as long as you can boot up in safe mode, what i would do is, save all files and pics etc that they cant live without and format doing a clean install

If it was hardware, you'd get a BSOD in safe mode which uses the same hardware.

I suspect software; a driver that doesn't get loaded in safe mode is causing the BSOD in normal mode.
Hold off on the format - that would be one of the last things I'd recommend; I usually try to repair before I'd advise a wipe.

    This http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903251
    suggests a virus.
Boot to safe mode and see if you can find anything like the above three.

Couldn't find anything like that. What else can I try?

Do you know anything that was downloaded/ran/installed prior to the problem starting?

Alright, I'm pretty sure this is a malware problem now. I brought the thing home with me and am typing this from Safe Mode with networking. I've been trying to install some other Antivirus programs because the one currently on the system (Panda Antivirus 2008) would no longer work. Why, I don't know. Malware probably.

But just about every time I try to install something, Windows says "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation." I am the administrator. And it didn't do this before when I had to remove literally hundreds of viruses a few months back. So now I can't install anything to remove the malware...Is there a workaround for this?

Probably because it is way out of date and can't catch the new malware out there.

You could remove the hd and attach it to your computer via the USB port then use your security programs to scan and clean it up enough so that you would then be able to install newer security software.

    I'd first try malwarebytes.
