Memtest86+ 2.11 Operation

I downloaded the memory test utility, memtest86+-2.11.iso.zip from this web site. I extracted it using WinZip 9.0. I then burned the iso file to a CD using the "Burn Image to Disc" feature of Nero v. 6.0.0.28. On the CD is a BOOT folder and a README.TXT file (with nothing in it except the statement "Just boot from this CD and Memtest86+ will launch").

In the boot folder are 2 files: Boot.cat (and when I try to open it, I get a message that the file is "invalid for use as a cat file"), and memtest.img. When I double click on the latter, I get a Spybot window that tells me the file is being scanned. Beyond that, I can't tell if, in fact, the memtest file is running. There is absolutely no indication that the test is running, and no way, short of a reboot, that I can figure out, how to stop it if it is running (if I needed to do so). There is no info, as mentioned above, in the readme file and nothing displayed when I run the test (if it is running) about how long the test will take. I have 2 GB of RAM, so it would not surprise me if the test took a long time.

I searched this forum and found references to memtest, but no discussion of how to use it. The "similar threads" info I did not find to be helpful.

Have I missed something? Does anyone have any additional info on the operation of this utility?

My computer is a Dell Inspiron 6000 with a 1.5 Ghz Pentium M processor and Win XP/Pro SP3

Hi twittertext, once you have extracted the .ISO you have to burn it as an image file NOT just burn it normally to a cd!

[if you are unsure how to do this download infrarecorder from majorgeeks and run it......]
Then you will see an option called "write image" use that and proceed as normal :)

Yes, I know that. That's what "Burn Image to Disc" means in my original post. But what then?

I place the CD in the drive and double click on the .img file in the Boot directory (on the CD), nothing happens (as far as I can tell).

    Hi

Once the image is burned to disk then reboot your PC with the disk still in the drive and enter your BIOS and make sure the 1st boot device is CDROM then save and exit and you should boot to the disk to allow it to run its tests, these tests need to run from the bootable disk they dont do much from within Windows GUI.

Once completed you can then re-enter the BIOS and reset the 1st main HDD as the 1st boot device, save and exit.

Hey Halo, is ther a reason for setting the HDD back to 1st boot?

As i always have mine set to boot from CD drive first incase i ever need to boot.

    Hi Q

Only thing it does is to shave a few secs off boot time as you go straight to HDD, I only set mine to CDROM as 1st if needed, personal preference I guess.

OK, that works. I just learned how to use an iso file. Rebooting from the CD is the key piece of info I needed.

I ran 1 pass of the test and no problems were reported. It would be nice to know how close this test is to those used by manufacturers. It would also be nice to have some statistical results (such as: finds 99.9% of all errors 99.9% of the time after x passes). Is this type of info available?

    Thanks for your help.
