I updated to IE 8 and have been noticing that when I put my computer on "standby" at night, my computer is often frozen the next morning and I have to turn off the computer and then restart it. Also, I have been getting messages that my email address and/or password don't match what is on file. Why is this happening and what can I do about it? :(

Which email and passwords are you referring to?

  4. Erika Danielle

When I go on a new website and they have to verify who I am they ask for my email and password. I'm assuming it's the info stored in the internet or in my computer???

  5. ~Q~

    ~Q~ Command Sergeant Major

    WOAH!

When you go to a new website you DO NOT have to "verify who you are" whatsoever!

    This sounds very odd!

Only if you wanted to register on a site, like you did to post here at Majorgeeks, would you put in a email and password, but then you choose it and ther is no verification, only when you come to log in to the site you registered at will you need to "verify" anything by putting in the usename and password YOU chose.

IE8 acting funny should not affect the logging in to sites.

What type of security software are you using [antivirus, firewall, etc.]

  6. Erika Danielle

    Erika Danielle Private E-2

I just finished a full scan with Malwarebytes ... no malware detected.

I use the following security software: AVG, IOrbit Security 360 and Advanced SystemCare, Smart Defrag, and Windows Firewall.

I also have Spybot and Ad-Aware SE, but I haven't used them since I downloaded the new ones.

The websites I've been having problems with are connected with President Obama's health care. I signed up to help on a couple of sites and am now getting requests from other related sites ... I guess these sites exchange client lists??? When I agreed to donate a few dollars and gave them my info, I got an error message that my email (not username) and password didn't match and I needed to correct the info before they could process my donation, so I exited the site. Since I've never been on this site before (they sent me an email), how would they know my email and password didn't match?

  7. ~Q~

    ~Q~ Command Sergeant Major

They wouldn't, it sounds like a scam im afraid :( who did you sign up to donate money too?
as i dont think obama is accepting donations for his healthcare payments, im sure he has it covered.

You should cancel any ongoing "donations" you have got set-up with this.

As for your issue with IE8 freezing up when on standby, try completely uninstalling IE8 [you should end up with IE6]

Then download and run Ccleaner --> http://majorgeeks.com/download4191.html
Make sure to run the registry option a few times.

    Then go to here and re-download IE8 --> http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/default.aspx

Or you could use a better browser, namely Firefox --> http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/

    Q

That was a phishing scam, please change your password associated with Paypal or whoever you would have used to donate, also change your password for email if it's similar to the one used for your donation.

If you still have Spybot installed, update it and make sure that you use the immunise feature. Download Spywareblaster, manually update it and enable all protection.

I think you need to follow the Read & Run me, follow it carefully.

If I downloaded Spywareblaster, do I still need to update Spybot?

Spyware blaster and spybot are both on demand scanners and both need to be updated seperately if you want to use both [which is a good idea] :)

If i wanted to donate money i would look in the yellow pages and speak to them directly and then probably cut a cheque :)

Re:eek:bama...they tried getting a donation.it was deleted.Re:IE8...there is a big push on it,a friend did download it.nothing but problems since.
the way I heard of removing it was not through programs i.e.add/remove but going ito installed(via windows uodate) updates I believe there is an option for it.Vista anyway, not sure with the XP OS.looked for it after the deed was done went into programs and add/remove came up empty.windows help gave up the option(s) mentioned. yes in theory if xp you would end up back with IE6 -with vista IE7.do not know why microsoft insists on letting programs out when they're still buggy but they do.Not one OS they put out was right the first time including 95.it is their nightmarish history unfortunately for the masses.am I wrong about this? uninstalling IE8 ..the OS thing was already documented

  14. Erika Danielle

    Erika Danielle Private E-2

Yes, I know they're not a charity, they're supposedly an organization that is running TV ads to counteract the idiot screaming and disruption at the townhall meetings and to get out the truth re Obama's health care insurance reform. I don't know if they are legit, but the ad in the email they sent me was really good and to the point!

  15. satrow

    satrow Major Geek Extraordinaire

Yes, even though they both provide passive protection, it is not all duplicated. SpyBlaster uses no resources once it is installed because you only need to run it to update and immunise. Spybot can also be used as an on-demand anti-malware scanner.

On to the boldprogressives.org website; currently there is a problem with the Google Checkout payment option.
In addition, NoScript flagged a cross-site scripting (XSS) attempt. I checked it and it was between boldprogressives and Google Checkout so I think that is safe.

The fact that some the payment side of the site is currently broken may go some way to explaining the earlier email/password problem - BUT - it may be that the site is being cleaned after an external XSS attack ...

Overall, I'd still like you to complete the READ & RUN me and ensure that you have changed all important passwords.

Just wanted to let you know I think this organization is legit and thank you for your concern. This is part of an email I just got from them: ERIKA, Last night, Keith Olbermann led his show (MSNBC) talking about the PCCC's latest campaign: "More than 200 former Obama staffers, 13,000 Obama volunteers, 23,000 Obama donors on a petition: A bill without a public option would not be 'change we can believe in.'" I actually saw this show last night.

I removed IE 8 then downloaded and installed it again. Now my google chrome won't work ... the tabs won't open, the desktop websites won't open, the search box won't connect to any url, and sometimes the desktop opens up without the website pictures. I have reloaded the desktop program and rebooted 4 times, but it never works any better. :cry Do I now need to remove, download, and install chrome all over again? Should I just get rid of IE 8? One of the replies I got said that you can't get rid of it thru the add/remove programs, but I didn't understand the other method. What should I do now? :confused

    capn crunch Private E-2

Why?you had it whipped and probably back to IE6 if xp.you can try this now and hope.open up windows update, once there you should see an option view installed upates >open it up and locate that IE8 then look for an option to remove from list(might have to highlight to do it if no checkmark present).if found remove and reboot you should have back the IE you had.should the remove option not be there after location maybe right click on it an choose delete.like above reboot.always reboot after taking anything out this way it boots up cleaner without that thing starting up.wish you knew how you did it before? try this scenario please.worst that can happen is you will still have IE8 do not forget to reboot if successful deletion either way then try to do what you normally do and did -should work if 8 is gone.alternativelyccleaner or hijackhis programs Will help everyone help you.oh an run a scan if possible after you get it back up again.Hope this is in plainer english sorry if confused before.

Thanks for the new instructions, but I still don't understand how to do it ... my friend was the one who got rid of IE 8 so I'll have to wait til Monday and have him follow your new instructions. The reason we reinstalled IE 8 is because that is what "Q" said to do in his reply. I enabled the full protection options in Spywareblaster and Spybot. Could this have caused the problems with Chrome? All cookies are now being blocked, but I'm wondering if Chrome needs cookies to know which websites to put on my desktop. If this is the case, will disabling the protection against cookies solve all the problems? (refer to my previous message for all the problems)

  22. satrow

    satrow Major Geek Extraordinaire

Spybot only blocks against some 193 cookies that are known to be spyware-related, enabling full protection in SpyBot and SpywareBlaster is not going to stop any browser from working normally.

Can you enable cookies in Chrome?

What browser are you currently using?

Have you tried using Firefox (linked by Q in post #7)?

  23. capn crunch

    capn crunch Private E-2

First,Great tip on using Firefox :)if she removed IE 8 methinks enabling cookes would not be needed again.guessing she still hase 8 if she has to wait tilll Monday to have a friend do it.good info on spybot and spyblaster there. That being said in review these steps should cover anything YOU want to do.

    Step 1:
Determine your operating system. Removing or uninstalling programs from your computers varies slightly depending on your OS (operating system). Determine whether your computer is running on Windows XP or Windows Vista. The instructions for uninstalling Internet Explorer 8 from both operating systems are outlined below.

    Step 2:
Remove the program from a computer running on Windows XP. Uninstalling Internet Explorer 8 from a computer that runs on Windows XP is relatively simple. Microsoft has made the process of removing anything from your PC quick and painless with the touch of a few buttons. So get rid of Internet Explorer 8, click on the ‘start' . , select ‘control panel' from your list of options that will pop up in a menu.

Once you are at the control panel screen, the icons should appear in alphabetical order. Look for ‘Add or Remove Programs' . It will take you to a screen that will list all of the programs that run on your computer. Search through this list and find the ‘Windows Internet Explorer 8' title. (Again, these programs are listed in alphabetical order so you should easily be able to locate this browser by scrolling down to the bottom of the list.)

Click on the ‘Windows Internet Explorer 8' title and then choose ‘remove'. This will confirm that you want to uninstall this program from your Windows XP computer. If you do, continue with the uninstall. When it has completed, restart your computer and Internet Explorer 8 should no longer be installed.

likely how you removed IE 8 before.had to use step 3 for another OS.in theory should work on any OS which could be what you did not understand thus mudding the water, step 2 was tried on vista as explained in the confusing post, this does not get any more straight forward

    Step 3:
Uninstall Internet Explorer 8 from your Windows Vista operating system. If you are running on Windows Vista, the instructions for uninstalling Internet Explorer 8 are slightly different since Microsoft's newer OS has been changed and updated. Don't worry. It's just as easy to remove programs from Vista.

To get rid of Internet Explorer 8, click on ‘start' Then click on ‘control panel' in the menu bar that pops up. Once you are in the control panel, you will have a few options. Select ‘Programs' or ‘Programs and Features' by clicking once on it. Once this screen pops up, click on ‘View installed updates'. You'll find this under the ‘tasks' column if you are using the classic view.

Once the updates list pops up, you should be able to quickly find ‘Windows Internet Explorer 8' in the list. Select it from the list of available updates and then click on ‘uninstall' at the top of that same list. Once you do this, you will start the process of removing this program from your PC. When it is complete, restart your computer. That is all that is necessary to successfully uninstall Internet Explorer 8 from your computer.

used step 3 for my friends machine worked just fine.you can do it
once gone leave it be.Please refer to my post that confused you 1st re:microsoft
as pointed out do not disable protection.answer to question absolutely No.most programs use cookies and tell you(most of the time, not always) that cookies will be used to run/use the program.because of the size and/or intent some will be blocked by programs you have i.e.spybot for your protection.
in conclusion Have a Great Holiday :highfive

UPDATE: After removing IE8, my chrome was still dead so I removed it and reinstalled it. I was shocked when my entire desktop came back exactly the way it way before the crash! I didn't lose anything! The test now is to see if it stops freezing up after I put it on standby for the night.

Can you enable cookies in Chrome? Enabled all cookies during installation.

What browser are you currently using? Chrome, but I plan to start learning how to use firefox ... you're right, the add-ons are really frustrating to learn how to use.

Better to just log off Windows instead of putting your desktop on Standby for long periods of time. Standby function is designed primarily for laptops and battery saving. This may not be the root of your problem but its a better practice than using Standby with a desktop pc. Also be aware that some programs are not currently compatible with IE8, but it's up to the proprietary software vendor to fix that, not Microsoft.

Hi Erika, how old is this computer?

It seems like you have had quite a time installing, removing, upgrading, etc.

I think maybe a wipe and re-install would be a good idea if you are willing?

It is a fairly simple process with the right help ;)

And a nice freshly wiped HDD and clean install always makes for a smoother ride.

If you don't want to wipe and reinstall... i would recommend having a proper good clean out, by which i mean uninstall everything [except any paid app's] and i mean everything! so you will end up with nothing but IE6 installed....

Then run some reg cleaners and make sure all the clutter is gone and then fresh install all the app's and prog's you know you want and need :)

Let me know what you want to do, as you need to download and save a few things before going ahead...... and by all means feel free to do none. :p

There is no need for it to go to a shop, this is stuff you can do yourself easily.

I got the computer in Feb 2005 and had it overhauled and upgraded about a year ago.

When you say it's a simple process to wipe everything clean, I'm wondering if that applies to me since I'm pretty much illiterate when it comes to computers. However, if you think you can walk me thru this process, I'm willing to give it a try!

I just need to get a few details and ill tell you exactly how simple it will be :)

Download install and run this program --> http://majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

Once you run it you will see an option called "report" select that...

Click "next", and select the "system summary only" option...

Then select "plain text", and click finish.

Once that is done a box will pop up with all the info we need about your system, save that file to your desktop or somewhere memorable. :)

Then take a look at this thread and attach that log to your next post.

    Also a couple of questions...

Do you have your XP-install disc?

Have you got a few cd's you can burn to?

Erika. with you not having a proper install disc, i'm hesitant to have you wipe and re-install windows, as it does involve a few more steps.

I think it would be best for you to just repair what you have, and i think the best way to do that is to uninstall as many programs & app's as possible... make a note of all the ones you want to reinstall!. and dont uninstall any app's you have paid for unless you have the KEY to activate it again!.

Then transfer as many files to that external as possible..... then run Ccleaner.... http://majorgeeks.com/download4191.html

    Then schedule a CHKDSK

Once the scan has finished and the computer restarted.....

Then run a defrag [not with the windows one]

    I recommend this one http://www.perfectdisk.com/products/home-perfectdisk10-professional/free-trial

It is a fully functional 30 day free trial.........
(btw..You have to give an email to get the download)

Once you have done all that go and download firefox & flash & java do them three first in that order, and then get all the other programs you want to install....

If you need any pointers on any of this just ask :)

Hi erika, i agree that you should not install chrome again yet....

    But lets just review.....

We have established that you are happy with the company you donted to is legit.

I believe that you problems were being caused by corrupted files, which hopefully the uninstall of most app's and a chkdsk/defrag will have sorted.

I doubt you have any malware issues tbh. but you cant be too careful so it would nt be abad idea to make sure your clean.

If it was me I would give the computer a few days to make sure it is running ok,

    THEN CREATE A RESTORE POINT!

Then re-install Chrome IF YOU NEED IT!

Chrome is a new browser and is still quite buggy, you can expect the odd issue when using it
