Fixing neighbor's computer - they were infected with Personal Antivirus. Followed the READ AND RUN ME FIRST for Windows XP. I'm attaching the logs. I tried to update their Windows, but when I try to log onto Windows Update, it tells me the page cannot be displayed. Tried it through the blue question mark under Start, but it says they're not connected to the internet (they have a cable modem). So I'm not sure what that's about and if it has anything to do with this infection.

    Any help is appreciated!!!

Because this PC was out of date with updates, your neighbors have managed to get themselves a Conficker infection along with other malware. In additon to not being updated, it was also not properly protected. Bad/dangerous combination!

Did they knowingly install this SeaGarden Toolbar junk! Seems to have showed up on June 27th. It does not show in Add/Remove Programs but it is loading. I believe this is something possibly used with FaceBook.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
    O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - ?p=GRxdm011YYUS
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {53F6FCCD-9E22-4d71-86EA-6E43136192AB} - (no file)
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {925DAB62-F9AC-4221-806A-057BFB1014AA} - (no file)
    O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Sorry it took me a bit to get back to you. I did what you said and here are the attached logs. Also, when running the ComboFix, I got an error message:
PEV.cfxxe has encountered a problem and needs to close.

When running the MGTools.exe, I got this message:
ProcessDll.exe Application Error - the application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135). click OK to terminate the application.

Was explained in the Using MGtools link.

Because this PC is so out date and because it has not protection, and because it had the Conficker infection a lot more malware was deposited on it while waiting for my first fix. Thus we have alot more to remove.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!
