Hi and welcome the the forum :)

Here in the UK, whenever I'm called to an AOL connection that uses a router, I always set the router to make the connection, leaving the user free to use whatever browser or computer they wish and it also removes an unneeded layer of complexity from the networking components <rant over> ;)

Ok, which country are you in, what version of Windows and Service Pack level? What make/model of router? Have you opened a ticket/asked for help in the AOL forums/web support?

    Thanks SATROW.
I'm in the UK. Windows XP (service pack 2 I think). Router - Netgear 54Mbps Wireless ADSL Moden Router DG834G.
Spoken for over an hour with a technician @ AOL. They were happy that I could get on the net with them, not very worried about the problem I had with IE. Problem is, I won't be able to get to them until middle of the week!

I'm unable to have a 'live chat' with anyone at AOL or Microsoft - maybe part of the problem? Microsoft Support unavailable until Monday but I'm unable to call them until midweek - hospital with baby. Need to get it sorted before we go on a.s.a.p.

Ok, fine, probably no point in trying to use MS support at this stage because it's probably an AOL UK bug or possibly some kind of infection.

I'm assuming that you were instructed to reboot the PC and the Router at some stage during your tech 'phone calls.

If you can follow the instructions on this page and report your findings back here, it will help. I'll try to find the current router settings for direct connection to their network.

Yes, I did the whole reboot and reset the router on IE during the phone calls. I'll try that now.

All basics are covered. There has been no change in how the PC has been set up and now new equipment that might interfered in the last year.

(Your link to the router for the missing router stats.)

Ok, let's try IE without ActiveX and extensions.Start > (All) Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (no Add-ons) or Windows key + R, type iexplore –extoff and hit Enter.

Also, can you restart in Safe mode with networking and test IE? Keep tapping F8 before the Windows screens appear and use the up/down arrows to select it.

Can you test with a different browser like Firefox or Opera?

  13. caeathro1978

    caeathro1978 Private E-2

OK. I've selected no add-ons and I'll get to try the IE in SAfe mode now. IE is the only browser I have.

Tried it in Safe mode but IE nor AOL were working - connection failures. Now back to how it was.
Would a normal system restore to a point s couple of weeks ago put it riht?

Ah yes, of course - your PC is set to use dialBB or whatever it's called to start AOL before you can use the internet; we'll need to fix that and set the router to deal with holding the connection open.
Yes or no - LOL, really, if you can get SR to run successfully, it may fix it. As uninstalling IE8 then testing with IE7 (it'll show once IE8 is uninstalled) and reinstalling IE8.

You can download, install and test using Opera or Firefox from the links I gave you earlier, we need to see if this problem exists outside of IE.

Ok, what firewall and antivirus do you have? Have you used any others and uninstalled them?

Windows is deactivated, as are the AOL security features. I'm using McAfee.
