I'm not sure if those outside the states have heard of these dolls, but they are Huge in the US for girls up to about age 9 or 10.

They are expensive and have an entire Manhattan NYC store devoted to them and their clothing. The outfits are about $25 a piece.

They have recently released Gwen, who is a homeless girl:

After I laughed in shock when I was told, I was actually appalled. I mean wtf?

    Has anyone seen this?

I saw the ads while I was in the hospital in Los Angeles, seems nothing but local news is reported here :(:confused

Anyway yeah in LA there's a mall dedicated entirely to "The American Girl Doll" including a beauty shop to have the dolls hair done, a restaurant to have lunch with your doll, of course a boutique.
I was dumb founded. There's a lot of money in that town so I imagine the children share in the extravagant life styles.
When you think about it it probably produces Paris Hiltons. :(

PS I think it's unconscionable to refer to such a decadent object as "homeless" what with the rise in homeless people including children, it's a slap in the face!

Not to sound indifferent, but, what's the difference of this to "White Trash Barbie"? Really --- it's anything to make money, and the more controversy with it, usually the more it makes. Especially works for movies --- like "The Last Temptation of Christ" and "I Spit on Your Grave", no one would have bothered with these movies without the bad press behind them.

    :-D

You can imagine what the range of dolls would be like then,Jenna ran away from her father who beat her,Penny was left floating in a basket with half a pop tart by her mother,Amy was forced on the streets when her mother high on PCP thought she'd been possessed by the devil.

'Collect the whole dysfunctional series get the free alcoholic uncle doll, with 5 great pull string abusive phrases.'

I was making an extreme caricature of the doll,do single digit kids really need to be aware of things homeless girls go through?

Shouldn't childhood be about magic, father Christmas the Easter bunny and such?I feel like just let them live in ignorant bliss for a little longer they have the rest of their lives to be burdened with the problems of the world.

Nah....if it was truly a life lesson, she wouldn't even have that half a pop tart.

The least they could do is give some of the profits to some homeless organization.

$95 for some stuffed material :eek Ironically they are probably made in some third world factory where children are paid 50C a day to crawl between the machines.

I'll look it up ,see where they are made.

From what I can tell they are all made in China, Malaysia and Mexico all notorious for child labour.

That's not surprising at all. They have to make a mint.

I agree. Their little minds have a hard time taking in the normal things that we feed them to help to build and structure them for the future.

I see the intention to a common issue in fact homeless has been a fact from when the first humans tribed together.

I believe there should have been a bigger idea to the doll such as free to real homeless children and what about the boys the doll should come with real stories about the children that have made it out of that situation through education.
I honestly dont know do these children remain homeless all their lifes?

It has not been that long ago that most americans lived at a substantially lower income one working parent less than about 30 yearsago, its only been since the 60's that women could even go to college. Its only been since the 70's that women could hope to be executives, CEO's, Business owners and we still are not paid equally. Not just women but there are real stories of children in the worst places that have become successful with as little as a high school education.

It is said it takes a village to raise a child.

I say they renovate an abandoned building with profits made, making apartments in all the upper floors employee the homeless parents on the main floor to make the dolls, house them in the apartments make a difference. Room and board
