Is it just me, or does anybody else feel like this?:confused
Even though most of us have never been face-face, do you feel like you could get along if you did, despite the kidding and ribbing we take from one another? That it just makes for a better bonding?
I know I feel that way about quite a few here.:wave:wave
They probably know who they are.
(And 'trucks, you too are on the list.:p)

Star and Abby!? Who da thunk! That is so cool. I'm with you Hrlow on the "better bonding" part. I have told so many people about this place and that one reason that I like it here is that no matter what is said to whom. the majority of us here still have a civil tongue with each other in the end and after the fact. Yes, I believe it does make for a better bond as you pretty much know some of , (or at least what they want to know) of that person when you meet them. Therefore you don't worry about meeting a total stranger as they are not a stranger at all just their face (unless you've seen their pic some where)

I have several real-life friends who started as online friends either here or at other sites. Some I've met once or twice, some I make a point of visiting annually if not more often. I've never met anyone in person and been disappointed or didn't get along with them. Shoot...G.T. let me spend the weekend in his spare bedroom, stocked the house with beer he knew I liked, AND took me to Graceland...not to mention he was in general a great guy I'm glad I got to know.

I think after a while, it becomes obvious who you'd get along with in the non-virtual world. And contrary to popular alarmist opinion, that's not a creepy scary thing. ;)

Hey H you just maybe right, the times i've seen some people in the street and thought that i wouldn't like them is sometimes a bit unjust, because a lot of people take people on face value, but then upon meeting them, find that they're not bad people at all, and thats how it is on here you don't judge people you just have a good old chin wag and get along, and i suppose if you have the chance to meet in person is a real bonus ! :)

I would have to say, sure. I like the fun and the ribbing..:-D It really is nice to not be so serious all the time, and kinda relax. Hrlow2, Rusty and BT, you all have some very valid points there...

I do think of it as bonding, in a way, hrlow. I am sure I could get along with most here, and whether I met them or not, I would know them from the inside out. :grouphug Really is nice to converse with folks here.;)

    Or do one. :-D

I've never met anyone I've become friends with online. I wouldn't have a problem with it, but my husband, who thinks it's all bizarre, would throw a fit. lol

There's a few I would like to have a beer with. Mostly, I have to say, though, that I like the online anonymity.

Well, since I'm in a land far, far away from most of y'all, I 'prolly won't get to meet most you in person. Yes, there are a few that I know very well and they know me pretty well also. Hey, at least I know of quite a few folks I can look up in person when I start travelling again. ...So be afraid! - LoL!

Like Laura said, sometimes just residing in cyberspace and nothing more is preferable, too;).

But the purpose of a book's cover is to advertise and sell the contents, is it not?

  38. hrlow2

    hrlow2 MajorGeek

What? You never heard of false advertising?

  39. bigtrucks

    bigtrucks MajorGeek

Yes it is the purpose but how many books out there are really saying inside what the cover says outside? As hrlow said. false advertising.

  40. Mimsy

Mimsy Superior Imperial Queen of the MG Games Forum

Most of the ones I own actually do.

Personally, I would rather assess a book on the cover art than assume the artist was lying to me. :)

  41. Phantom

    Phantom Brigadier Britches

Well, Psychologists say that we judge people primarily by the first 5-15 seconds of contact, when meeting them in person. The 'cover', (appearance, speech, demeanour) are about all we have to go on initially, so there's not a lot of choice, at least at first.
It’s the same on-line, except we don’t have to worry about appearance, at least not until they post a pic. of themselves.

  42. Mimsy

Mimsy Superior Imperial Queen of the MG Games Forum

In a sense we do... we have other attributes that substitute for the physical appearance. The avatars and signatures we've chosen, our posting style, both vocabulary, how formal or informal we are, and the way we use punctuation and grammar, all of that combines into the first impression we make online.

That's by the way one of the reasons I want to be able to format my signature and use more than two lines here. I want to be able to edit the cover art. :)

I'm posting after reading only the first page of this thread. I'd have to say that meeting someone online is much easier than meeting someone on the street. I come to this site daily, and it takes nothing for me to open a thread (existing or new) and throw myself into the conversation. The threads here are meant to be open discussions, thus there's no hesitation for anyone to come in and join. It'd be a different story if you walked up to a crowd of people who were standing around talking (that you'd never met) and just started adding your thoughts. Some groups may like it, others may think you fell off the looney train.

I've met a handful of people from the online world in person, and most of the time it was fantastic. I did meet one liar, but she got hers. Moving on.

There are a lot of immediate perceptions that we make as soon as we lay eyes on someone, though unfortunate. Online, all we have to go on are the thoughts and emotions that the others are willing to share. It makes for a more secure feeling.

I like to talk to anyone, and I'm not afraid to rub shoulders in a discussion for something I believe in, with friend or otherwise. I also have come to realize that a lot of times, it's more sensible to walk away from a disagreement with a friend, than it is to fight to the death.

Everyone here is awesome, all the normal posters are great. At times, this site is more like moral support than tech support. LOL

May be it's better that we do not see everybody thereby forming an impression from their demeanor on the forum.
We are not all beautiful to look at but maybe pass muster on the keyboard.

PS Mimsy why do i need a life just because i can read it.

That's the beauty of the internet, you can be whoever you want. ;)

Having a life is highly over-rated. Just have fun with whatever it is you want to do instead.

I'd meet ya both, abz and nj. Unfortunately, I think a divorce would soon follow. Hubby doesn't 'get' socializing via the internet. Even being married to me for this long. LOL

I remember about 10 years ago or so, another board I was involved with actually did have a group of my 'friends' get together. I told hubby about it. He just looked at me and and was like no f-ing way. Its just never been one of those things that meant much to me anyway, so I wasn't going to push on it.

I agree with Mims though as far as book/cover analogy. Personally, I think you can get a pretty quick read on someone on a message board / forum...particularly if you have been online on them for a while.
