    Hi all.
    I have a intermitent problem.
Every now and again passwords cannot be entered at the xp login screen.
All users are there, plus a guest account.
I highlight my, or any other password protected account, the box appears but no flashing cursor no matter what i do.
I have to click the unprotected guest account, wait for it to log on, then come back out of that account and all is well.
    Any clues??
    Cheers.

Are you using a USB keyboard? I'm just guessing but that wouldn't explain why it doesn't happen all the time.

Have you tried in safe mode see what happens there !

    rustyjack.
It is so infrequent that it would be impractical i'm afraid.
Plus, in safe mode, you don't have all the same user options.
You get a administrator option so it isn't emulating the situation when it actually happens.
    Thanks for the suggestion though.

The reason i suggested this, because it may be a virus or software problem and you may just be able to point the finger in some kind of direction, also try getting rid of all temp files, type in run " %temp% " and delete everything in there this is a safe practice so don't worry !

Does it happen when the computer has been on for awhile or after switching users at times. If you have a spare USB keyboard, I would replace it and check to see if that helps out.

I had an issue similar to this and found out that when accounts running under the "Users" group logged off and I tried to log in with the Admin Group policies, the keyboard didn't function until I rebooted the computer. Once the reboot was done, the keyboard functioned correctly. I changed out the keyboard and everything work perfectly.

And no, there weren't any virus', malware, or spyware on the computer. I did check it out because that was a concern that I had.

This is the problem da bell.
It has happened when someone has logged off and it has happened from a boot up.
    I haven't got a usb keyboard.
I have no known viruses or malware.
I shall have to see if rustys clearance of the temp folder does the trick!
I'm having a few issues at the mo, perhaps my comp is dying.
I get bsod's concerning driver issues and my onboard sound has stopped working twice in one day.
Had to uninstall the drivers and disable the sound then reboot and reinstall.
    PAIN!
