    Hello Support Forums,

I guess as long as I have a computer there will usually be issues. My issue is this:
I have 2 desktop Winxp, one of them is already hooked to a D-Link router which in turns is linked to the Modem DSL for internet access.

I am trying to link the 2nd computer to the D-Link Router to be able to access the internet.

I attached the eternet cable to port2 on the D-link then ran it to the 2nd computer. Turned off the modem and unplugged the D-link, waited, turned the Modem back on, waited for a steady blinking green light (which it did) then I turned the D-link Router back on. Tried to access the internet on the 2nd Winxp, but no go!

So, I took the 2nd Winxp Processor and plugged in all the cables from the 1st PC, with one exception, I plugged the etrenet directly from the modem to the Processor, and "BAM", no problem with internet connection.

So, at least I know there's no problem with the 2nd Winxp, as far as being able to access the internet, since the Modem supplies a IP address automatically.

My problem is, what am I doing wrong? How do I connect 2 Winxp's to a D-Link connected to a Modem DSL? Am I missing a step or procedure? Obviously I am, because I can't seem to get the 2nd PC once plugged into the 2nd Port on the D-Link.

    Please Help!!

    Thank you in advance

Have you checked the router configuration pages to make sure the number of IP addresses available is more than 1?
If you post model # and version of router, it would help to diagnose the problem.

Thank you lbmest, for a quick response.

The router is a D-Link Dir-655, and the #1 Desktop is a Compaq Presario Windows xp SP2 and the #2 Desktop is a Compaq Intel Celeron Preocessor Windows xp SP3.

I'm not sure how to check to see if the router configuration is set for a certain number of IP addresses available or if it's set for more than 1 IP address.

I appreciate any other input on a solution and how to fix this problem. Thanks so much.

Open a browser and type in 192.168.0.1
This will get you to the router configuration utility.
    Default User Name - Admin
    Default password - <leave blank>
Authentification characters - type in as shown (Hit Regenerate for new characters if needed)
Under Set up heading at top, should be a listing on left for DHCP Server Settings. Click on and make sure "Enable DHCP server" box is checked.
If it is, Listed right below this is the range of IP addresses that are available to be assigned. Default is 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.199.

If all looks good, hook up second computer to another port besides #2.
Shut down whole network and reboot in sequence allowing time for each piece to connect up. Modem then router then comps.
When the second comp is up, and if a connection is still not available, go to a command prompt (Start > Run > cmd) and type in ipconfig /all. Either screen shot and attach or type in the results so we can take a look at the results.

So the first result is when comp #2 is straight to the modem?
It's assigned an IP address as if the modem is a router also.
In the second case the comp is not getting to the Dlink at all.

What model and version of modem do you have? I'm thinking it is a modem/router combination.
If it is, you will need to turn off the DHCP service on the Dlink. 2 routers together will cause conflicts in the IP address scheme.
Did you try to access the Dlink from comp #1 to get to the configuration pages? This is where you would either enable or disable the DHCP service.
Also, have you tried changing ethernet cables around to make sure all the cables are good?

I have a Westell 6100 Modem, and I did go to the D-Link site 192.168.0.1, signed in and disabled the DHCP. But, Afterwards there was no internet access. So I went back to the D-Link site, signed in and changed it back to enable DHCP.

The Ethernet Cable that came with the Modem is new and I haven't had any problems with it being connected to the 1st computer. I also bought a brand new Ethernet cable, so they are both good.

I also changed the Ethernet cables around, I put the orginal on the 2nd computer, and visa versa. Connected the 2nd computer to the Modem directly and Internet access is great. Did the same for the 1st computer, Internet service very good.

I also manually assigned a IP address for the 2nd computer (the one I'm trying to get internet service through the router), and that did not work, I went back in to properties of my Network Connections, and checked "assign automactically" , when I put the Ethernet Cable back into the 2nd computer, no problem with Internet Connection.

There's the problem, the modem needs to be set to bridge mode as it is a router also.
    Here's a guide - http://www.lava.net/support/Westell_6100_DSL_Modem_Installation_Guide

Take the router out of the cabling and hook up comp #1 straight to the modem then follow the above guide to set it to bridge. Once that is done, put your router back in-line. You should power down the network before doing this and then power everything up in sequence.
Hopefully you won't have to redo the DLink router initial configuration again but you may.

lbmest, thank you very much for your response again. Yet I was so excited to hear the words of your opening sentence "There's the problem,", instead of reading the entire "what to do", I did not; "Take the router out of the cabling and hook up comp #1 straight to the modem",

I ran right ahead and opened a browser, typed in the Modem's address and commence to refiguring all from the link you provided, and next thing, NO CONNECTION TO THE INTERNET:cry.

Thank goodness for 'reset' on the modem, of which I did, and back on again came the internet connection. How embrassing:-o. Oh well, that's what I get for not reading the entire postrolleyes.

So, when I get home I will do just what you instruction and will post again. But I really truly appreciate all of you here on the MajorGeeks Support Forum. I applaud :clap you all.
Without you all, I surly would be lost.

    Thanks Again lbmest.

And I spent all that time keying it in, Well I Never.rolleyes
(Truth to tell, I think everyone can claim to spot reading a post now and then. I'm as guilty as the next person.:-o)
This should sort the problem and get you connected with both comps.
If you have any other problems, just remember to stop in here. There are a bunch of peeps in here that know way lots more than me.

Ibmest, I just had to write a update. Siince you are the one the helped me, well, then I say you are one of the best, a True :major Major Geek!!

Now for the update. I did as directed, yet the 2nd computer was still not recognized and was not able to have a internet connection. Today (Sunday) I deceided to give it one more try. I must have reset the modem over 25 times over the past week, even today I had to reset 3 times, reboot and start again, all the while, still a bit confused :confused, as to what I needed to do.

Well, I did not want to reset the D-Link Router, I had put to much time in configuring everything, but it was my last option and hope. Once I reset the D-link Router, both Ports #1 & #4, the Lights were on. :)

Oh Happy Day!:clap I went over to the 2nd computer, and I am very pleased to announce that Computer #2 is Internet accessable. :celebrate

I don't know if I have to Reconfigure my wireless network for my laptop yet, but I will worry about the later!! Right now I am :celebrate:drink, thanks to you Ibmest!!

So, here's a group hug, from the Modem, D-Link Router, Computer #1, Computer #2 and most definately Me :grouphug.

    ;)
