Video card bad..or something else?

I rebooted my PC and my display won't come back up.

I see all the preliminary screens detecting drives and stuff at boot up, but once it finished and should go to my logon screen the display is dark. The mouse is visible and moves, but nothing else. Keyboard doesn't seem to do anything.

I have tried safe mode and had the same results.

I am running a P4 and XP SP3 if that makes any difference.

The first thing to always do with display issues (besides making sure the cables are securely fastened) is to swap out monitors. If the problem follows your monitor to the 2nd computer, you know the problem is with the monitor. If the problem stays with your computer and new monitor, you know the problem is in your computer.

What do you mean the keyboard doesn't seem to do anything? Does the keyboard stop working? Or does not help with this problem?

 

Well I think I have determined corrupt OS.

 

A repair should be all you need then. You will have to update the system again.
