Hello. Hope I do this right. Alot of SERIOUS rules for someone who has no clue what she is doing, but here goes. . . . My Dad died recently and his computer has come to me, it's been great until lately. I'm not even sure what all the stuff on this machine is, but I'm afraid of deleting anything much. Obviously a techie I'm not. SO I need help, bear with me and I'll try to explain (I hope I'm not TOO detailed but I don't want to leave out anything important) and do whatever you tell me to do (just explain it to me in simple language with lots of detail. thanks.) So, on Aug 23 I think my computer got some malware shipped onto it. At that time my security software started acting weird (not updating for one thing). So I tried looking around the internet for help but anything I tried to use to scan either came up empty or shut down on me. If I tried to delete something it said "access denied" and that it might be in use or write protected. Believe it or not I've been working on this for a good 19 hours now. I just am feeling my way around in the dark and it's soooo frustrating! It's vital that I can get this sorted out because I teach online courses this semester. Ok, so I tried following the "read me first" and here's how it went:
    1) Ran CCleaner, etc.- ok.
2)Tried SUPERanti-spyware. The system wouldn't allow me, denied access.
3)Malwarebytes worked but I can't locate the log!
4)Combofix worked. (At this point I was getting hopeful, but alas)
5)Tried Rootrepeal (the regular and the mirrors) and it would say "initializing" and the virtual RAM would dive and the computer froze until a "timed out" message came up 20 minutes later.
    6)MGTools worked fine.

BUT..... still cannot update or get into some security software, virtual RAM low, looks suspicious.

Is this a rootkey, worm or what do you think? I think I may have seen where some of them are hidden. Should I write them out for you? It would be lengthy, but I'd be happy to if they'd help. I really tried to follow the procedures, hope I'm giving you the info. you need and thanks. Ok, now how do I attach these things........ back to my notes......

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please download and run Win32kDiag per the below instructions:
    • Download this Win32kDiag and save to C:\Win32kDiag.exe. You must save it here!!!!
    • Click on Start->Run, and copy-paste the following command (the bolded text) into the "Open" box, and click OK. When it's finished, there will be a log called Win32kDiag.txt on your desktop. Please attach this log
    C:\win32kdiag.exe -f -r

Now download Junction, zip to your Windows folder
    • Please download Junction.zip and save it to your Windows folder (i.e, C:\Windows\Junction.zip This assumes C:\ is your Windows boot drive.)
    • Now unzip it and put junction.exeinto the Windows folder (i.e., C:\Windows\junction.exe)
    • Do not try to run it right now. We will run something that uses it later.

Now we need to reset the permissions altered by the malware on some files.
    • Download and save inhertit.exe to your Desktop: Inherit.exe
    • It must be in your Desktop or the below fix will not work!
Now run the C:\MGtools\FixPerm.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).
    • A command prompt window opens and also a license agreement from SysInternals will appear for Junction.
    • Accept the license agreement and the scan will begin.
    • Wait until it finishes we can take a while to run since it scans your whole harddisk. e patient and don't do anything else while it is scanning.
    • The command prompt window should close when it finishes.
    • While this is running, you will get several/many popups that have a title Finish and say OK. Just click the OK button each time. This is an indication that it has found a file and has attempted to fix permissions. Depending on how many files that need to be fixed, you could get only a few or many of these popups.
Now uninstall the below old versions of software:
    Ad-Aware SE Personal
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    SpywareBlaster v3.5.1
Symantec Network Driver Update <-- Symantec AV has already been uninstalled
Symnet Redirector Updater <-- Symantec AV has already been uninstalled

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: Spybot-S&D IE Protection - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [DWQueuedReporting] "c:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\MICROS~1\DW\dwtrig20.exe" -t (User '?')
    O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [DWQueuedReporting] "c:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\MICROS~1\DW\dwtrig20.exe" -t (User 'Default user')
    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
    O9 - Extra button: ComcastHSI - {669B269B-0D4E-41FB-A3D8-FD67CA94F646} - http://www.comcast.net/ (file missing)
    O9 - Extra button: Support - {8828075D-D097-4055-AA02-2DBFA9D85E8A} - http://www.comcastsupport.com/ (file missing)
    O9 - Extra button: Help - {97809617-3937-4F84-B335-9BB05EF1A8D4} - http://online.comcast.net/help/ (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Also delete all files and subfolders in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Naomi R. Trask\Local Settings\Temp

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I'm not even sure if I'm replying correctly to this! Man, I am out of my element here. Well, I did the procedures you sent me (thank you so much by the way) and I can access my Mcafee (Woohoo!). I'm concerned because virtual memory still seems so low, but I dont really know if things are all better or not yet. Oh and I read the definition of bumping right after I did just that. Oops! Felt preeeeetty stupid- so sorry. I'm attaching the logs. Why do you think people create these infections? If anyone doubts the existence of evil . . . but I digress. Thanks for your help thus far.

I think I'm healed -or at least my computer is ;) Am I right? Do the logs look clean? Everything is looking back to normal on this end. So, what's it like to be one step below deification? Does the power ever overwhelm you? So, need I even say it? THANK YOU!!!!

Looks fine. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
