On another thread I mentioned that I had a broken laptop and wanted to retrieve my info. Someone recommended that I buy one of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812232002

Will this work for recovering my info if my hard drive is not dead?

No, it won't. The description says it works for 3.5" and 5.25" drives.
Since a laptop hd is 2.5", you need to make sure that 2.5" drive is mentioned in the specs, otherwise, you will need to purchase another adapter as well that converts a 2.5" connector to a 3.5" connector.

Let me look and see if I can find something that will work for your laptop hard drive.

    I started here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...BESTMATCH&Description=usb+to+sata/ide+adapter
and there are 3 products that mention 2.5" drives: StarTech (first one listed @ $36.99, Rosewell (6th in the list) @ $24.99 and the Kingwin (13th in the list).
The most expensive got the best ratings and the cheapest got the worst ratings. I'd scratch the last one, Kingwin then decide what you want to pay. You should be fine with either of the remaining two products.

I haven't used one of these as I haven't had need. Just for clarification the original one looks like it will work--see the specifications tab--and customer reviews.

I think the mention of only 3.5" and optical drives in the description was only to point out that a power adapter was included as these larger drives might need extra power. The specifications do say 2.5 IDE drives will connect as well.

    EDIT:

Now your drive is a 2.5" SATA. So I'm not sure. Maybe someone can confirm that 2.5 and 3.5" sata drives have the same connector?

Yes I would say it should work, as the specs for the product provided the link are:

    So it should work .

His drive, if you look at the 2nd picture he posted says Serial ATA (SATA).
    The product says under specifications:
    Interface:
    SATA to USB 2.0
    3.5"& 5.25"IDE to USB 2.0
    2.5"IDE to USB 2.0
    Dimensions: 70 x 43 x 10 mm
    Cable Length: 92cm (36in)

Again, I say this will NOT WORK for his laptop drive unless he purchases another adapter. He'd have to get some sort of 2.5" to 3.5" SATA adapter, I'd think.
So I pointed him to three products that will work out of the box without buying another adapter.

OR is the SATA connection on a 2.5" drive the same as a SATA connection on a 3.5" drive?
I don't have any SATA drives in the house, just the red connectors for the motherboard.

Don't want to argue, but it should work as according to the specs as well as the pictures, it should be able to handle SATA as it comes with the cables for it:
And the pictures do show a SATA port (I've attached a screenshot picture)

The original poster solved his problem by (I guess borrowing such a cable from someone since he already has recovered his files over in a Software post).

I don't want to be argumentative either but I guess what Plodr and I are asking are if all SATA connections are the same. Is there is only one size SATA interface so that if the specifications say [ SATA to USB2.0] that means that a laptop SATA (2.5") HD and PC SATA (3.5") HD will connect because all SATA drives have the same connectors?

I think they are the same but am not sure. Just as I once thought PC and laptop IDE drives had the same connections. Only because I have read various threads do I realize that laptop and PC IDE devices can have different size connectors. I had thought IDE meant one size. I have very little experience with SATA drives can you tell us if SATA drives can have different size connectors or are they all the same (2.5" and 3.5" drives)?

Thanks for help clarifying the situation Tux_Rules. :)

From what I understand of the SATA drives and from looking at the OP's pictures (namely the first one), is that all SATA connectors are the same:

    http://www.tomshardware.hu/storage/06q2/060407/images/sata-connector-scheme.gif

Looking at the first pic. from the OP, I see where the cable attaches to the bottom left and the power cable to the right of it, which is what is shown in the pic link above.

    And from here:
    http://pinouts.ru/Power/sata-power_pinout.shtml
all SATA connections are a 15 pin configuration, regardless of 2.5 or 3.5 in drive.

Wasn't trying to be ignorant or disrespectful, but it should work. ;) :-o

I would still like to apologize. I did indeed miss plodr's question listed below:

It would have saved me a bit of embarrassment :-o if I had seen it as I could have answered and clarified sooner.

Thanks Tux_Rules and Digitalocksmith for clearing things up. I haven't had a laptop for probably 10 years so I know little of there parts anymore. Now I know at least one thing about their HD connections. :)

Thanks. I've never seen a SATA drive "in the flesh" so I was using my IDE knowledge and one of the reviews which seemed to say the connector was not clipped in properly.
I will now file away the fact the SATA drives are "one size fits all". ;)

I promise to try and do better the next time. :-D

If you have a desktop also, you can go buy a SATA to IDE adapter for pretty cheap and hook the drive into your HDD ribbon cable as a slave.
I use the IDE to USB/SATA adapter all of the time I like it alot, just be careful with the Vantec ones the SATA adaptor cable can fit in 2 ways when it comes to laptop HDDs make sure you align the notch correctly or you will won't be able to see it

    Hope all goes well,
    Ryan
