but there already is a php forum system.... phpbb....

 

I'm with JJJIrish on this. Could you explain why you are set on reinventing the wheel? Do you feel that phpBB lacks something? It is likely to be far easier to modify the existing phpBB code than to set out to write one from scratch.

 

first off, there are many free php forums. I prefer MyBB. But why pick phpbb? thats the most embarassing out of all of the forums you can pick from.
secondly, I really want to do this.

 

Again, I'd ask that you justify what you're saying. Why is phpBB embarrassing? What about MyBB do you prefer? And is that the only reason you want to write your own forum software?

All that aside, I'm already busy on several projects, so I won't be able to help on this one. My apologies.

Right... we get that you dislike phpBB. Why? What makes it so horrible?

 

I used to have a phpBB forum and got millions of hits a year, lots of active users, but I was inexperienced and added alot of mod's like an arcade, chat, all kinds of things and got hacked by some arsehole from turkey.

I am going with Simple machine forums now, I hear the code of it is alot better W3 verified, and I know of alot of forums that use it. IP Board looks very promising but i think it costs money or VBulletan

There are so many boards to chose from WHY use to code from phpBB to re-code and design a board, when their are alot better ones.

 

why make a new forum using php from scratch when you can just mod phpBB?

Honestly you guys cant bash phpbb, as it is one of the most secure bulletin boards, and the most popular on the web. Your inexperience and use of third party modifications would have played a major role in getting "hacked". The only downside to php in my opinion is how the output formatting is tied into the code, makes it nasty to follow and hard to reuse code.
