    Hello all

Lately,( few time now) without me doing anything, a new gmail tab opens on it's own, asking for password. I also suspect I haven't been getting important mails.

I change my password frequently. I use https. The recent activity details option in gmail seem OK. I use kaspersky antivirus and firewall. Plus 4 antispywares. Can my ISP guy hack into my emails?

Like everyone else, my whole life depends on email! So any help would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks a lot!

    Hi

    Which Browser do you use?

If Internet Explorer, then try Firefox or Opera and see if the same happens, if it does then something else and possibly malware is the cause, if not then suspect that an Add-on in Internet Explorer is causing the issue and follow this to narrow it down.

Alternative is that you can use an email application to download your emails off Gmail to say Windows Live Mail, Thunderbird, Outlook etc and instructions are here and here

What four antispyware applications do you use? if you have ones that live scan/resident then you may find that they are conflicting with each other and can at times cause many issues that cannot be tracked down easily, the rule of thumb is one antivirus, antispyware and firewall running at one time.

    Hey Halo,

Thanks for your quick reply. I use firefox. Anti spywares are

    1. Spybot
    2. Adaware
    3. Super antispyware
    4. Malware anti-malware
    5. Snoop free

I'll check out thunderbird. So a different but related question is, Is there a time lag between an email shows up on the web client and when it is on thunderbird?

I really hope someone can explain the automatic opening of a new gmail tab!

P.S- Before being accused of being paranoid, Every antispyware was installed after it actually discovered a spyware (Mostly trojans) which others didn't detect!

    Hi

I would do a bit of a cleanup on your PC and this guide is good here

I dont know what "Malware anti-malware" is so if you have a link to that application I would like to read up about it?

Do try an alternative Browser in Firefox or Opera to see if Gmail behaves the same as this will give some clue as the the cause, also do try the IE no-addons mode I mentioned.

As for Thunderbird, then the lag to email being transfered from the web to the client is not noticable, I had one gmail reply from a auto reply from a site virtually instantaneous earlier today.

If the above doesnt help much then best course of action is and as you have mentioned malware/trojans infections in the past is to run this GUIDE and then post a new thread in the Malware forum and attach the logs as requested.

Halo, I believe that they mean MalwareBytes . But what the heck is this "Snoop Free"?

i googled SnoopFree & it's some kind of freeware from some people in TX. looked at their privacy policy and doesn't appear to include any adware, BUT main page says it's only compatible with WinXP (doesn't specify Home or Pro), but only through SP2.

    robbydoddy:
are any of your anti-malware programs set to run at start-up, or do you run them manually, one at a time? if you have any of them set to run automatically, it could possibly cause any number of weird things to happen.

you might want to check out this, for information on a few of the anti-malware products you're using
    Code:
    http://anti-spyware-review.toptenreviews.com/
the information is on the paid for versions, but should give you a good indication.

depending on which Kaspersky products you have, there may be conflicts with one or more of the 5 anti-malware programs you're using. you might want to post in their forums to see if there are any issues with the anti-malware programs you're using and your Kaspersky products.

cake: Only Adaware runs at the startup others I run manually. Only Spybot has a few times complained of a possible problem with Adaware but I ignored it.

plodr: As, I mentioned earlier it seems OK.

Halo: Funny thing is my PC follows all that in the guide. I'll try something else than firefox.

Thanks guys. Gotta say, Watching your comp do things on it's own is very discomforting!

Not sure if it was mentioned or implied but could this be a phishing attack?

Personally I use NoScript as many here would know and I can't but help promote this amazing "free" add-on which is highly recommended by many IT security experts. It stops "scripts" in their tracks (Ads, ClickJacking/redirecting, etc. etc) that are embedded within the vast majority of web pages. Yes it is a little complex at first and takes a bit of getting used to but it improves web safety incredibly and does remember your settings.

Bold Eagle: I am a bit embarrassed to admit but I use NoScript too! :-o I agree it seems like a phishing attack.
It's incredible to see even after such security on my computer, a tab could open on it's own! Can ISP boys be playing mischievous monkeys here?

Hmmm maybe go to Gmail and look at the settings it does seem very suspect activity?!? I have gmail as well and it doesn't do this to me. I would approach their help and support for recommendations.

    Yea another NoScript buddy :-D.

If you have run the guide and no malware was found then still its a good thing to start a new thread in our malware forum area and attach the logs as you may have a malware type thats not going to be picked up automatically but will need a manual experts eye.

Also indeed do try alternative browsers as it could be an issue with a update to your browser or an add-on, so if using Firefox, then try Firefox's Safe mode which loads no add-ons to see if one of them is causing this.

another thought; have you thought about using Outlook/Outlook Express, or Thunderbird or something, to get your gmail? i use OE6 (Thunderbird was a little clumsy for me & had a higher learning curve that i didn't feel like dealing with) and i DON'T have IMAP enabled (i didn't want all those extra folders & had a couple problems moving things around in OE).

just enable POP3 in your gmail account and follow the instructions for configuring servers/ports, etc. in O/OE or Thunderbird or what have you. i don't use the web to get any of my hotmail/live, isp, yahoo or gmail; it get them all in OE; i just use the web to set them up and make folders in OE.
