So I stumbled across this tevo satellite box today while packing stuff up and we don't use it anymore so I decided to take it apart o_o was bored...and I to my surprise I found a 80gig HDD and I was like heck I need more space and I want to get my old tv shows recorded off of there.

I hook it up to my Dell Optiplex GX270 theres not officially a slot to put another HDD in but I took out the floppy and but it in because I don't use it and have a usb floppy. So I set up the HDD on master and put it with my cd-rom IDE cable put the cd-rom on slave and in the bios it shows the HDD but in windows its not detected at all the cd-rom works as well but I have no clue whats the problem. I was hoping I don't have to format the drive :\ before I get my shows off of it.

I think the reason why it's not working is the file format is a file system that windows cant read. I think you can bootup GParted to see what file system it is.

You May have to reformat the drive to get it to work in windows.

    Don't reformat!

There are many ways you can explore this issue.
    - Firstly try and disconnect and then reconnect the HDD
    - Change the jumper settings on the HDD and CD drive
    - Look at your BIOS settings (Integrated Peripherals) and look for the HDD Mode!
    - Another option would be to DL a Linux OS (Mint, Ubuntu, etc) and burn a "LiveCD", OS will operate from the CD and then see if you can see the HDD.

Damn reformat the HDD would be the last option.

    Hi,

I think PC hit it 100%. Bios is only looking at the fixed info the manufacturer put on the drive and is getting proper info. OS is looking at the data format and finding somthing other than the correct stuff.

    Luck, Jim

I'm thinking its not in the correct format either :\ I've tried hooking it up again with out the cd-rom and it still isn't noticed I haven't tried to install an OS to see if its recognized. I will give that a try tho.

i take hard drives out of dvr systems all the time and this seems right up my alley, if you want to use it as a slave you need to change the jumpers in the back the dvr is built with the jumper set to cable select you want it to be set to slave, the jumper placement guide should be on the front read it carefully, no matter what kind of filesystem it is your gonna have to format to get the right one, as for where to plug it in, it goes in the slave ide slot on the primary ide cable not the secondary

Go to control panel, admin tools, computer management, disk manager and see if the drive shows up,if it does it may tell you what file format the drive uses.

i'm on my psp so sorry if i double post

in this place you can also delete the partition and create a new one and format it with the right filesystem NTFS now wallah you have a new slave drive the good thing here is that if your master drive crashes all of your files will be safely away from all of the madness that happened

Okay maybe you can rebuild the MBR of the HDD and then gain access. I have done it previously on 2 failing HDDs in RAID0.

Such tools can be found on:

    UBCD

Specific tools include and should not be limited to are:

    MBRtool version 2.3

    MBRWork

    There are many more there.
