    I have a Intel\gateway D845GERG3 mobo ... the bios string is ...
    RG84510A.15A.0037.P15.0304012013
I can't change the maximum hhd capacity ... it's set a 2.1G when I try to highlight it, it simply moves past it ... I tried installing the BIOS update, but no change ... why won't it let me change the hhd maximum capacity from 2.1G? Why won't it highlight that area? Why does it skip by it? How can I get the bios to see the whole 20G hhd and more? My system that I am running now ... see my sig ... has a similar board ... the bios string is the same yet in its bios there is nothing about max hard drive capacity. I don't get it ... does anyone have a clue as to what is going on?:cry

You have no Signature and writing like this in big angry red letters may deter some from even responding to your question.

    Hi,

You can't change the max size of the drive in BIOS. Auto will pick up the size info from the drive itself. Some older drives can be set to lower sizes by the jumpers on the back. Do as Bold Eagle suggests and give more info. How much difference is there between what you are seeing and what you think it should be.

    Luck, Jim

It wasn't mean to be "angry ... and I thought I did have my sig here ... but it won't let me put one up claiming I have more than two lines when I don't ... here are the spec for the machine I'm running now ...
    Windows 2000 Pro Intel/Gateway mobo D845GRG WD800JB/WD800BB
    1GDDR266/256mbDDR266 (PC2100)Nivida GeForce FX5200 P/S 400W

:wave Apparently auto isn't doing as it should ... right in the "advance" section I go in and highlight Primary IDE Master ... when I get to that page I see Primary IDE at the top ... below that I see Drive Installed IMB-DPTA-372050, below that I see Type ... when it is in "auto" I can't highlight anything ... when I switch it to "user" I can highlight four items ... below that I see "MAXIMUM CAPACITY 2.1GB" ... and I am not able to highlight this at all ... below that I have Configuration Options Selected by BIOS
    LBA/Large mode set on auto
Block mode ... set on auto
    Pio mode set on auto
DMA mode set on auto ... those are the only things I can highlight and change.:cry
    I shouldn't even be having this problem with a 478 socket mobo.:confused

Tried a couple of things ... tested the hard drive with WD tool ... did an extensive test, it checked out good ... same with the memory:confused

Are you sure you don't have a jumper limiting it to 2.1GB. Maybe, try turning LBA/Large to ON in BIOS if that is an option.

Is this drive empty? If so you could try formatting it in on a current machine and see what happens.

Well I did some checking and it's the craziest thing ... I took out the 80G data drive in this machine and connected to the other machine and the bios saw the whole 80G ... and the machine bios I'm running now ...when I put in the IBM drive shows 2.1 G ... so it's the drive. I have no idea why it is doing it ... but it is ... when I did the check with the WD tool it saw both the 20G and the 2.! G ... really weird   ... When I removed the data before formatting it showed 18G ... so I don't get it ... all I know is ...I have to use another hard drive. rolleyes
PROBLEM AS SOLVED AS IT'S GOING TO GET ... NEW HHD NEEDED

Sometime try the Hitachi Drive Fitness Tool and see how it reads the drive. Hitachi made that IBM model.

Just checking but did you have your jumpers set like this on the IBM drive.

:wave Thank you so much for that link ... a couple of people suggested doing a low level format as well ... so I will check it out ... I have nothing to lose by doing it. It doesn't look like it was set that way :confused

    Hi again,

Thanks for the thanks. I was really guessing about the jumper. Haven't seen a drive like that in years. Glad you got I going.

I like pretty colors and fonts large enough so it is more easy to read ... dark red was just the color I felt like using ... bright red I associate with warning or anger.:wave
