i "jury-rigged" my own version of Stardock on my XP using TuneUp Utilities 2009 (only use the Styler to change icons, theme (actually imported from elsewhere), bootscreen, logonui; rest of the stuff is garbage, IMHO). you can get "stuff" from TuneUp's website. set my own desktop, use freeware (clean) Iconoid to tweak my desktop a little more, Power Menu so everything goes into my systray and ClockX & NoteZilla (both hidden until i mouseover) for my 2 gadgets (didn't want anymore).

    and YEAH, i know it's girly.LOL

I'm going to have to try out those apps (I've got some googling to do!). Thanks Cake! I forget that you can actually change icons to match your personality. :)

TuneUp Utilities is $49.95 USD here (i really don't recommend you use the rest of their features because i think they're total crap. got jv16 Power Tools that isn't crap):
    Code:
    http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/
NoteZilla is $19.95 (there are similar freeware "sticky note" programs, too) here:
    Code:
    http://www.conceptworld.com/NoteZilla/
Power Menu, Iconoid & ClockX (TONS of different skins) are all clean freeware. links, in order are here:
    Code:

    http://www.sillysot.com/
    http://www.clocx.net/
i could have gotten Stardock, but already had these and they worked great for my wants/needs on my XP. all the programs i've mentioned are compatible with Windows 9x through 7, btw. if you want any particular tips on specific uses of these, post back and i'll be more than happy to give you the info.

another note: my "jury-rigged" system doesn't do all the things Stardock can (there are a bunch of different products, including an All-In-One), so you might want to check it out here:
    Code:
    http://www.stardock.com/products/
probably cheaper in the long run, but i'd already spent money on what i had and it's good enough for me.

Thanks for the links. Very helpful. I've got some reading to do.

I had gotten some personalized folder icons years ago that I still use today. I find them very good for sorting data. Don't remember where I got them pixiegirl or deviantart probably. They are looking a bit dated now so I think it might be time to freshen things up.

btw, sach2, i asked about posting pics in the forum (in the lounge) that do what your pic does. direct post of pic from your pc, forum setting, particular hosting site or specific program you're using? would like to know. thing i was looking for "looked" different but did the exact same thing your pic does. expands to full size (hover or click on) with no loss of clarity.

LOL those icons aren't so dated looking, IMHO; they're just not MY particular shade of pink. do have an icon editor (Axialis) and plan to make some specific ones, eventually.
