AT whits end here. Reformated computer with ASUS P4P800 mother board. It has onboard Ethernet (3Com). I found the drivers on the support page, but can't get them to load. Tried pasting them in the system32 file and everything. When I try to install the normal way in the device manager it won't see the driver from any location. I can't get on line with the computer so can't use a driver find program. Please help me to load this. I have almost done more damage trying so far and almost lost windows completely. Brain is fried,

By the way, I built computer years ago and lost the install disk in the flood during Katrina in La. Lucky I took my puter, but not the software.

Welcome to MG's. I have moved your thread to the drivers forum where you should get better help than in the welcome center. :)

:wave Welcome to Major Geeks! :major

There are several different models of the P4P800 motherboard (P4P800-SE, P4P800-MX, etc). However, from what I can tell, none of them use 3com ethernet onboard. They use the Marvell ethernet chipset. You can download the drivers using this direct link. The file is a ZIP file, so you'll need to extract it first. Also, you didn't mention which version of Windows you're using, so I assumed WinXP, and that's what this driver is for. I hope this helps! Let us know how it works out for you!!

Sorry, It is XP, and I did find that Marvel made the ASUS mother boards and the 3C940 Gigabit Ethernet LOM I have on my board. I went to the link you gave me and downloaded the file, extracted it and tried to install, however, I got a message "Internal Error 2753.InstallU.exe" I did it again and same message. I read the readme and I don't understand the "silent" install. Please help. I might add, That I have the yellow exc point unter other and the ethernet card is not named with any brand. I cleared the RAID and the sound error on board with no trouble but this one is driving me crazy.

I am now able to access the internet by wireless with the computer. I still need to get thedriver for the ethernet however, because the wireless is only temporary. I posted twice and it did not show up. The site yu sent did not work. Did you get my posts about that?

Do you mean the driver didn't work? Or the actual link did nothing when clicked on? Regardless- please provide an Everest report as outlined in this thread.

I down loaded the file ok that you sent, but got an error on installation. It would not complete. I have sent the file from Everest 3 times and hate to send it again not to clutter up the site, however, it does not show up.

    [ On-Board Devices / 3COM 3C940 ]

    On-Board Device Properties:
    Description 3COM 3C940

My computer sees this,so why does it not name it in the device manager. I even paid for a program to search for drivers and it could not even identify it. I waisted my money but it was the one Marvell gave on their site.

    Hi

Make sure you have installed the Chipset driver first and rebooted then install this 3Com Lan driver for the P4P800 Deluxe which had the 3Com Lan.

I installed the chip set, rebooted, then unzipped the driver you sent. It opens a lot of files and none of which are exe files. I clicked on several and found one that was an install program and it looks like it went through the process, however, nothing is fixed. Even after rebooting and trying to let device manager find it in a file somewhere. Please give me simple steps for a "blond" to install this driver before I blow my brains out. I am ready to buy a card and install it in a slot which is sad because this should not be this hard. Thanks for your help, I am so frustrated at this point that I am insane.

    Hi

If you have not already unzipped the 3COM driver then right click the zip and choose Extract All

Then click Start and Right Click My Computer and choose Properties, then Hardware tab and then Device Manager, if you have a device for network adapters with a yellow ! mark by it then double click it and choose the Driver tab, then click Update Driver, choose "No not at this time" and click Next

Then choose Install from a list or specific location (advanced) then, click Next and choose "Search for the best driver in these locations" and untick Search removable Media and tick "Include this location in the Search" then click Broswer and browse to the location of the unzipped 3Com folder.

Once you have highlighted the folder click OK and then click Next and X-Fingers the driver will load.

I went through the steps you gave me (which are what I have been doing) and it says "the driver was not installed because the proper driver was not found".

The exact message is "The hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software" I tried again from scratch.........

I down loaded the older driver for the 3Com and it had a Connection assistant file to install. When I tried to install it it told me that it needed the following conditions on my system before I could install it. It needs Microsoft Virtual Machine installed first. I can not find this any longer since MS does not support it any longer. Can you find that file for me so I can try and install the assistant and maybe it will install the driver?

    Hi

In Device Manager what yellow ! marks are there? please list all devices and if possible a screenshot of the Device Manager page would be good (as hard at time to troubleshoot a machine when not sitting in front of it as you'll apprieciate)

How to take a screenshot and How to attach

Luckily enough I have many files saved and an old version of Microsoft JVM is on my PC and I have uploaded it to my Skydrive HERE

Thanks for the input. I am not at home at the moment so can't do the screen shot until later, but all devices are fine at the moment except in "Other" it has the yellow mark then under it it has "Ethernet" and a yellow beside it also. At one time there were two more, one for the sound and one for the RAID which are both on the MB also, I was able to install drivers for those ok and they were removed. Could it be because I did not install the Chip driver before I did those? Is the order that important and I am reading now that it is?
I will send screen shot after work when I get home. Thanks again for trying to help me.

I installed the MS Java VM you sent and the 3com connection assistant loaded well. To no avail I might add, it did nothing to help so wasted time again. I down loaded the screen shot program and saved it in paint, however, could not upload it because the file was too large, and I can't figure out how to make it smaller. I am so tired of this. Prehaps I should do a windows repair and then start over and install Bios, then chip set, then Lan in that order? Plese tell me I don't ahve to do that, I appreciate all you are doing, I am so frustrated.

LAN cards are not expensive, If i purchase a new one, can I disable the one on the mother board with no conflicts? I am just worn out on this and my son needs his computer back for his business. He is dead in the water without it and its been a week. Thanks for all your help. I know it must be frustrating for you to try and help long distance, I could not do it!

Ok, now I know I am not crazy. Yesterday I bought a Dynex Gagabit PCI adapter to replace the one on the MB that will not load. I went into the BIOS first and turned off the LAN on board so it would clear. I uninstalled all programs that I had installed trying to load the 3Com driver so everything would be clean and rebooted. The device manager was clear, so far so good.............. then shut down, installed the card (easy). Rebooted and installed the driver. (this was following the instructions from the manual). Then rebooted again and NOTHING!. I connected the cable and the lights come on (flashing slowly) and my router sees the card, however, the driver will not install again and it shows back up in the device manager under "Other" with the yellow excl point and listed as simply "Ethernet Controler". This can not be happening again! There MUST be a windows problem. Please help, I am ready to skid this thing across the highway.

UPDATE! I uninstalled SP3 and shut down. Then I took out the new LAN card, booted back up, installed the new driver again (first this time before inserting the card). Shut down and installed the new card, then booted back up. LOW AND BEHOLD! I have a new device with a driver that works........ plugged in, got into the network fine, zipping along. Don't know what made it work this time, but just glad it did. Made me wonder if I had turned off the LAN on the MB first and then installed the 3 com driver before turning it back on to detect it?????????? well we will never know now.... I am back and working. However, the computer is slow, slow, slow, so I still need to do some maintenance to speed it up. Before I started this fiasco it was much faster. I have not flashed the BIOS yet, and quite honestly, I am scared to do it, but it needs it I am sure. Thanks to everyone who helped me and I hope by reading my problem it helps someone else.

    Hi

Wow, great troubleshooting steps, glad you have it going now and for maintanence steps this is a good guide HERE

To be honest, the BIOS is the last thing you really want to mess with, do read if its supplied with the Download or on ASUSs website the changlog to the BIOS update as if it doesnt list a problem you are having then dont update as BIOS updates if nto done correctly can render a motherboard useless.
