    Hi there everyone!

Probably a bit off topic, but I haven't had a need for antispyware apps yet.

I use Avast antivirus for AV protection and I run without administrator credentials, that''s it.

This has kept me out of harm's way for years and I can recommend it to anyone!

You do need to get accustomed to it, you need the Run as... command more often and sometimes you need to log on as a local admin, but that's about it.

There are some programs (definitely not the mainstream ones and mostly older games) which do not run without admin rights, but I don't use these, I move on and look for a better alternative which does the job the way I want it.

I hope I can help some of you with this tip.

    Kind regards,

    Vigoras

    Hi DomLuc,

Thanks for the reply. I am aware of this, but it's like you said; it's real time protection (as in resident/in memory).

It's meant to protect you from spyware BEFORE you can get it and it's not intended to clean up spyware afterwards like Hitman Pro for instance (AFAIK).

I think it's a great program and I highly recommend it as a free AV suite. Been using it for years and haven't looked back since.

    Kind regards,

    Vigoras

Ad-Aware's Anniversary Edition is a big improvement over their previous version. It updates quickly and I have not noticed any bugs whatsoever.

Like Halo I manage to keep my own computers largely out of trouble, whichever I use.

With regard to well infected computers, MBAM and SAS do a creditable job, so long as they are allowed to run, but too many things can now suppress them. They often need support from something like Combofix or Roguefix, as anyone who has been to the Malware forums here will have seen.

I like Xoftspy portable which can run from a U3 drive (no installation required) and have never seen it suppressed by malware.
    I also like Partizan

I have several 'computer dunce clients' who have had no further infection troubles since having either the paid version of AVG or MaCafee following serious problems.

This is the first encounter I have had with a mess.I trusted att with there soft ware.Never again.I always had Zone Alarm Suite.I also have Wol,it will not let sites or pages down load that are bad.I do not care for Norton360,That was the only suite they had at the tine.I also have Registry Mechanic. It is very good for telling of cookies that want to be placed on my pc.I too try to use common seance but being a green horn I tend to learn the hard way.You know that is a very good way to learn.I am open to any suggestions any one has.

God bless you all for helping.

I use VIPRE too for real time protection, and the machine I have it on has never been bitten by either malware or spyware.

I also use Malwarebytes and SAS as secondary back-up scanners, which I run a couple of times a month.

When Comodo BOClean Free bit the dust, I wanted a replacement for a real time scanner since MG security experts recommend that you have one.

I purchased a license for Malewarebytes Anti-Malware simply because it was a bit cheaper than SuperAntispyware and the consensus here (MG forums) is that both are about equally effective.

I also have SuperAntispyware and a-Squared Free installed and I do periodic scans with each. I also use SpywareBlaster and occasionally scan with Spybot.

The only issue I have with Malewarebytes Anti-Malware is that the automatic update feature has never worked, as far as I can tell. I do manual updates two or three times a day.

I don't recall seeing any pop-ups from the Malewarebytes app. and it remains unobtrusive. Also, as already mentioned, the scans are reasonably quick.

Another notable feature of Malewarebytes Anti-Malware is that updates are issued very frequently - something like half a dozen times a day.

SuperAntiSpyware is the best. It runs fast and gets most things. If you run it first then Malwarebytes second, Malwarebytes does not usually find anything but it is not so the other way around. I work on a lot of computers with spyware problems and have started using superantispyware first and following up with malwarebytes just to check but it almost never finds anything when used second after superantispyware.

Oh yes, and it is user friendly to the non-geek.

Hi I use "Super Anti Spyware first. Then I use "CounterSpy.That usually gets anti nasties lurking in my computer. I follow that up with a scan with "AVG". Witch is my anti virus app. Some people use programs I would never use. But they work for them !

Hmm being a paranoid noob, I have several Anti-Malware/spyware scanners. Most are on the list. Once a week I do my full day ritual of running each in turn until I am satisfied that my PC is as clean as I can get it. I don't think I could choose just one.

Overkill - Probably. But, it keeps me from going crazy.
(I'm so close to crazy I don't need to driven there - I can get out of the car and walk to it.)

You don't have to use Only one.
It's just recommended that you use only one Real Time active scanner.
I think lots of people use several different scanners, since no one app alone
can be 100% effective all the time.

A number of people have posted comments stating that, at some time, one scanner found something that another did not.
    That's not really unusual.

If you haven't already, you should read through this post:

well, after a recent drive-by infection, from God only knows where, i got Spysweeper, in addition to the free Spybot S&D i already had. i made my decison based on what i read, here:
    Code:
    http://anti-spyware-review.toptenreviews.com/
seems to be doing a bang-up job for me, although that drive-by was a real doozy. probably clicked on a link from a Google search and missed the red check-mark my McAfee SiteAdvisor had next to it. who knows.

glad i did the research & happy with Spysweeper.

Wow, I'm late for this thread! LOL I think you should let us vote for multiple options! And how come SpywareBlaster isn't listed? :confused

In case anyone wonders, I voted for Spybot. It's my first line of defense, together with SpywareBlaster. Back-ups for bi-weekly scanning are MBAM and SAS. And of course Avira is always active. :)

I have SAS as my real time and use Malwarebytes, spybot, and spyware blaster. SAS rarely finds anything but Malwarebytes and spybot always comes through and find things. Wish I would have gotten malwarebytes for my real time protection.

It's free for 30 days, after that the trial expires and it becomes a scanner only, with no real-time protection. The scanner is still excellent, of course. :)

I know this isn't quite anti-spyware, but the computer at work we use is once again been hit with viruses. The admin has Symantec AntiVirus version 10.1.4.4010 installed and for the 3rd time in 8 months we have been infected. We do not have admin rights so fixing it is not possible for us. Oh well, looks like they will take the computer again, re-image it, and not put a good anti-virus program on it. ;)

updating my info (need a "none" option). kicked McAfee to the curb over a month ago and now have KIS 2010 and got rid of everything, about a week ago. plus, i got my 1 pc KIS 2010 for a lot less than my 3 pc McAfee suite cost me...actually got rid of my McAfee with 3 months left on my subscription and i didn't need protection on more than 1 pc, although it's available if i need it in the future.

after reading and posting about various issues in the Kaspersky forums, i just decided i didn't want or need them. there are so many powerful features in KIS 2010 that i feel completely safe without any additional software.

unless something really funky comes out in the future, i'll stick to my KIS 2010 and nothing else.

Really? Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware have been the best for me repairing other computers. It's always a good idea to check into what tools work best on a regular basis, I assure you it is very rare that the best antispyware app 5 years ago is the best today.

Oh, and I dont use protection, I don't get infected. I run AVG Free for basic protection. I don't download movies, games, apps and I dont click unless I know what it is. I dont click or open email links, etc.

All I ever get is false positives occasionally.

  37. Major Attitude

No, however a lot of anti-virus programs now cover malware protection, so usually those third party tools are more for scanning and removing.

  38. c_mella

Most antivirus programs have weak antispyware protection except maybe Norton internet security or KIS 2010. A scanner like malwarebytes seems a necessity

Both Comodo antivirus and AVG antivirus have let through bugs in my sisters comp..
Since then i have changed it to Avira Personal edition along with Comodo firewall (firewall only). Except for the nag screen every time Avira updates it works beautifully and use SuperAntispyware for scanner as Major Attitude suggested.

I don't see why they can't just incorporate a freeware anti-spyware application into another freeware anti-virus application, and then wrap it all up with a freeware firewall application, it just makes sense.

    Hi:

Since I had to pick a fav, I chose SpyBot S&D.

Aside from my router (hardware firewall), I use the following security software. All of it free. I currently use XP Pro and Vista32.

    Residents:
    Ad-Aware
    SpyBot S&D
Rising PC Doctor (trying it out)
Avast! anti-virus (Avira AntiVir tests a bit better but I like avast’s pre-Windows boot scan feature).
    ZoneAlarm software firewall
    SpywareBlaster
    KeyScrambler Personal
    WOT (Web Of Trust)

    Non-residents (kept up to date):
    A-Squared
    Malwarebytes
    SuperAntiSpyware

Avira Rescue System. Every now and then I use this to burn a bootable linux-based disc containing the Avira AntiVir scanner/remover with updated db in case malware locks me out of Windows.

All of the above is available free from MajorGeeks. No conflicts/slow-downs here.

I use Firefox (w/AdBlock Plus add-on) as my resident scanner and pay attention to the sites I visit. I don’t open e-mail attachments (Outlook 2003).

    I think I’m safe 

    Happy trailz

It is being done, most do now however they seem to do a poor job. Malware needs to encompass everything by definition (viruses, trojans, spyware, etc.) so I almost would like to see the name anti-virus not be used. Less confusing in the long run. Of course, your internet security apps (all in one suites) have always done an average job at everything, so I guess we should not be suprised. :)

  50. spynot

    spynot Private E-2

Well personally none of them do the job all the way which is why we need more then one:) But for securing my PC's I use other software to keep me safe because no matter how much anti software I place on my system there is always going to be the one that gets by. Where am I going with this, well You don't want to be spied on right? Get a program that does not rely on signatures to protect yous since all the above do rely on signatures. Spyware makers are not dumb they just change their code and release it to be undetected by this software. We need more software that does not rely on it. Get programs like Keystroke Interference it encrypts your keystrokes so even if captured they get encrypted data which is useless;) There are others also but I like this one since it does not kill my pc.
