Deb Richardson started LinuxChix because she was tired of seeing new users being browbeaten for asking "stupid" questions. She was tired of seeing people respond to perfectly valid questions with "RTFM", "we're not a Linux help channel", and other such not-terribly-useful things. She wanted to attempt to create a more hospitable community in which people can discuss Linux, a community that encourages participation and that doesn't allow the quieter among us to be drowned out by the vocal minority. She also wanted to run a group that was aimed at women.

sounds cool. i too was once a novice linux user (still am, just not much of a user anymore) and was not too happy with the support I received on some linux forums. Maybe now I will check out linux again and get some better help from that site. I just hope i don't have a problem cause I'm not a woman. :)

Hmm, I had the same problem when I got on the 'net 7.5 yrs. ago where all I heard from these kiddie forums was reformat you jerk, RTFM and other such nice tidbits and this was XP! Luckily I found MG's in time as I was ready to throw my machine out!:-D As to *nix forums, there some really good ones along with the bad ones like anything else on the net. Enjoy the ladies version!:)

Actually, I have always found Scot Finnie's forum, the section All Things Linux, to answer all stupid questions I've asked.
The only reason I had the courage to attempt to install my first distro a few years ago was because of all the patience and support I got from the posters there.
You don't have to be female to ask stupid questions, even though I'm female and ask loads of stupid questions. At Scot's everyone is treated with the same respect, no matter gender nor experience level.

Wow, now I feel like a moron for not having figured that out... :-o

Back to the topic at hand, I have always found the Ubuntu forums and the Linux Mint forums both were very helpful and welcoming to ignorant newcomers. However, the more widespread the tolerance for "stupid questions" becomes in the Linux community, the better. It will only benefit everyone in the long run. I'll check out Linuxchix at some point, when I have some time to spare. :)

Worse, I work in tech support. Which is why my brain goes on sabbatical every chance it gets, since it needs to heal and recover.

I'm serious, I didn't know. LOL To be honest, I never actually thought about it. You're smart, mature, and knowledgeable, and in my mind that matters a lot more than gender. ;)

Well you got the mature part accurate. :-D I'm over 60 but my brain still thinks I'm 20-something! Of course my body is always there to make the correction.
