Sry if this topic has been posted to death but I need help. So Im a 23yr old high school grad with some college and I wanted to get into the computer field. I always been somewhat good with computers and always been instersted but never pursued a career in it. So I finally decided to do what I like my problem is I dont no what field to go into. I was leaning toward Computer Graphics but I heard Computer Engineering/Programing is really good too. Im looking for something stable and that I can get into somewhat easy/fast. I also wanted to go to a trade school because my financial situation isnt lookin to hot right now and I figured that would be the best/fastest route (correct me if Im wrong). I live in NY so if anyone knows any good schools or programs that would help to.

    Thanks

Do you like routing and switching, programming, server administration, basic end user help desk?? there are many different areas of IT someone can get into.

don't write off a particular career because you won't be able to get your dream job, tomorrow. my youngest sister got her BFA in graphic arts from CU Boulder and after several jobs, including a forest ranger in UT, she finally got the career she always wanted.

train for what you love, do what you have to, then wait for the "cream." you'll get there, for sure. she graduated at 24 and did okay, but her dream job didn't come along until she was close to 40.

patience is hard when you're young, but it sure is worth it if you can stick it out.

To rephrase cake's post: What about computers do you enjoy the most?

    That's your career.

I have no idea. I only have the computer knowledge of like a everyday user nothing advanced so I wouldnt know if I would like those things. Im pretty open minded though I wouldnt mind going into any good IT field. You know what would help alot is a site or something that could explain different fields and there descriptions/benefits/salaries etc...

Yea I know my biggest mistake was not doing what I love right from high school and going after the fast route and trying to become a cop, 2 yrs of college take a easy cop test boom Im NYPD only thing is I ended up hating everything about it and never finished. That with a few family and job setbacks has me in a bind adding Im out of college now doesnt help. Im pretty sure any IT field that isnt torture with reasonable pay, thats not impossible to get into once I graduate Im going to like. Its hard to be patient when ur 23 with the responsiblities of a 40yr lol

I always loved the thought of Computer Graphics/Designs stuff like that but is that a good field, is there a high demand for it? And I thought of Computer Tech fixing computers I would like to do that but like I said before Im pretty open minded to learning anything or starting a career in any IT field as long as I dont need 10yrs of training lol. Its not like I have any real experience in any particular field to say "Thats it I love blank so Im going to go for it" so I wouldnt know. Thats why I need some insight so I can start seeing whats out there and what would be good for me...

And is a trade school the way to go? I have very few college credits going back to school would be like starting over again which I was trying not to do but if I have to I would defiantly go back...

I know you said you hated everything cop related in your previous post, but one field that is fairly new and interesting is computer forensics. It's not currently offered at alot of colleges as a degree program, but it will be soon. here's a snippet from the computer world magazine under their career watch section. A question was asked about top IT skills needed now and in the next few years. The guest for the article was the chairman of IT at Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology, Scott Newman.

I work at the University of Michigan -Dearborn campus. It is finally going to be added as a bachelor's degree next fall, and it uses a combination of Criminal justice classes and computer science.
