Anti Update Software

What I would like is some software which just runs on the computer and lets me get on with something. Every sodding day my stupid Vista announces it's downloading an update it's installing an update it's configuring an update Where would you like to go today? I'd like to prat around all day updating a few updates. Now this wretched defrag thingy is updating itself and slowing down my little half horsepower machine. Can you geeks not just go away?

Welcome to MG Quisquis :wave Just exactly what is your problem today? It doesn't matter if you have Vista or XP, Windows will update and that is something you want it to do. It is natural.. If you have (which sounds as if you do) Automatic Updates configured, then your computer will check and pick up what it needs.. With AU, you don't have to do anything.. ;)

If your system wasn't updating, you would have some major problems.. Now, are you looking for an anti virus or anything? As far as slowing or stopping the updates, no, that is not a good idea... You WANT it to be updated to the latest updates and security patches... They are important.;)

Oh, and what is this about?
I don't think we are going anywhere anytime soon;)

Welcome, just turn the updates off or better yet set it to 'notify first' but make sure to update after every second Tuesday of the month, as that's the usual update date. If they are coming in now then that means it's an urgent update and should be installed but at your convenience. That's the way I have my Windows 7 set up as I have no patience with my machine rebooting without my permission.

Yup- I agree 100% with augie. I'm also running Win7, and I have the updates set to "Notify me, but do not download or install" so when new updates are available, I get a balloon message down by the clock telling me that new updates are available. Then when I have an extra five or ten minutes of 'downtime' where I'm not in the middle of something on the PC, I'll check out the updates to make sure there isn't an update I might not want, then I download/install 'em. As to other programs updating themselves: I only have my security software set to auto-update (antivirus, antispyware, firewall, etc). Most of my other software I have set to NOT check for updates. In your case Quisquis, I see no reason for a defrag program to need to be updated. Go to its settings and disable the option to check for updates.

    And a HAPPY THANKSGIVING everyone!!!

You could of course drop Windows altogether and use a Linux distro. Linux distros also get offered updates, but unlike Windows it really isn't that important whether or not you accept them. Linux simply doesn't have the problem that Windows has of of constantly being attacked by malware.

I've had a look at Kubuntu, Ubuntu, Mandriva and OpenSUSE and all of them can do all the things that Windows does, so maybe there's your answer.

I have windows set to notify me but not to download or install any updates.

When you say your defrag is "updating" i think it is likely that it is actually running a scheduled defrag, i would either set it to run at a time when you are not likely to be on the computer or just disable it and run at your own leisure (thats what i do)

Infact i have all programs banned from updating themselves, but if your not the type of person who will remember to check regular yourself you are probably better off putting up with them running themselves.

Also it sounds like your running vista on an under powered machine, looking at the screen too hard is likely to slow that thing down :p

P.S. ~ Geeks are here to stay :D

What's yer point Earthling? The OP did not ask for an alternative OS and as much as I like and run Ubuntu in a VM 24/7, I think that's an inappropriate and unhelpful post.;)

I'm lost as to why you have thought it necessary to post this Augie. The OP said "What I would like is some software which just runs on the computer and lets me get on with something". He didn't say it had to be Windows software, so I'm offering him something which meets his wishes.
