Question

If I upgrade from one nvidia card to another nvidia card do I need to uninstall the drivers an reinstall? I'm thinking yes as it's a diff card which I do but I'm also thinking that it will work as the driver is the same for both cards.

 

What i do is download the new driver to a file on desktop and then uninstall the old driver first before installing the new.

The new drivers sometimes will uninstall it for you but i do not trust the uninstaller as much as if i do it myself.

 

id uninstall the old drivers first tern off install new card and let windows fined new drivers on the net

 

Thats OK but with Nvidia cards the newest drivers are not always the best.

In my case with folding i want Cuda drivers and if i let the OS do the job i don't get them.

 

I'm thinking Nvidia might bundle drivers for a few different cards into one installer. The installer might be deciding which driver is for the particular card installed. So even though it might appear to be the same installer package for both cards the driver that is actually chosen to be installed might be different.

I can't be sure about the above but you are right that one driver package is often used for several cards. I've seen other manufacturer's driver packages that have .inf files for several different models and am thinking Nvidia might be the same.

 

nVidia currently have 1 driver package for each class of card (5, 6, 7, 8, 9 series etc)

 

the only way to be sure mite be to fined it in your os and update
