Could the shuttle do a horizontal take-off, to commercial heights?

If it did a totally horizontal takeoff then it would never leave the ground, and would likely smash into a mountain!;)

No, if the shuttle did that it would never build up enough speed to leave the atmosphere.

LoL, just wait until the rest of the Jellyfish school catches up!;) :eek

Re: Pax:- Maybe 'Commercial Heights' is just a shopping mall for jellyfish sting remedies? :p

@ Rikky:- Apparently, apart from that transitory oh so warm feeling, pee saturated suits won't help them much.;)

It doesn't have fuel tanks for the rocket motors so it has no means of propulsion, when it comes in to land its just falling gracefully,if you fit liquid oxygen and hydrogen tanks in the cargo bay in the main fuselage you'd have at least 25 tons of fuel which would give you 500,000lbs "A 747 has 59,000lbs" of thrust for at least 6 seconds at 4 tons of fuel consumed per second but you could throttle it down.

It would definitely take off, even from vertical,I don't know about commercial heights though.

I thought the shuttle had fuel on board somewhere. I watched a landing once & they said they powered down & coasted from Alaska to Florida. I said commercial heights, because I didn't know how to word a take off, without meaning getting to space. I just wondered if it would be able to throttle down a runway and get to the air. Once you cut that chute, all bets are off otherwise.

I'm sure any vehicle that can be 8 miles away from the take off spot in 30 seconds wouldn't get there on tires.. They'd cover a runway pretty quickly if it used everything it did normally to reach orbit.

    Oh well.

They only have the hydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide tanks near the rear they are only for manoeuvring and they are tiny,I doubt they would even have enough thrust to move the shuttle on the runway from a standstill.
