    Hi,

My step-daughter recently purchased an HP Pavillion dv4-1435 DX notebook.
She is complaining that it has slowed to crawl. I looked in task manager and there are 96 running processes! The memory usage was at 49%. I suspected a virus(es) and ran Malwarebytes. It found eight infections. My question is; What is the normal or baseline number of needed running processes for Vista?
96 processes seems abnormal to me.
    Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving!!!

    Bill

The memory use is about right for Vista but 96 processes is too many, should be around 60. Assuming the infections have been dealt with, maybe there are too many programs started at start-up and prune those back to only the usual ones that are used.

    Hi

I woudl agree with Augie, make sure the malware is completely gone before going through other steps to deal with the running processes as you can end up chasing your tail if mawlare is still present.

Visit our malware forum and run the Read Me Guide to help the removals process, then start a new thread in that malware area fo the forum and attach the reqested logs then once you get an all clear, we can set about slimming the processes, in which many are not needed from Printer, java, Quicktime updaters, to having some applicatiosn that are not really needed to run at boot running when your not even using them, Windows Live Messenger for example (just need to see the startup list or just count the number of icons in the system tray *next to clock* and thats a good judge of whats running)

To find the startup list as in the guide it mentions CCleaner then you'll have that installed, so run it and click Tools > Startup and that list is whats running at boot on the PC, just take a screenshot (do try to make is smaller and crop out the wasted areas to allow attaching) and attach and we can advise, a sample of my startup and what I cropped out is below as a guide.

    How to take a screenhot
    How to attach

Thanks for the responses. I killed all running processes on start up and the transformation is remarkable with no ill effect on the laptop. Many thanks again!

Good news, just make sure your anti-virus and firewall(if you have a 3rd party one) are included in start up as those load before any internet connection is made.
