We have lost several folders of photos. I used a recovery program to get tehm back, but everytime I try to open one of them, it gives me an error message "file header unreadable". Is there any way to fix this?

    Thanks..Bill

I already have it loaded. I am not sure what version so, I will need to check that, but Infran is telling me that it cannot read the files. Also all of the pictures have $ signs at the beginning of the file name (if that makes a difference). Thank you for the response.

    Greetings, Bill...

You might try renaming the files...also, check the file extensions, make sure they're '.jpg' (if you can't see the extensions, open Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, View, and uncheck 'Hide file extensions for known file types')...

The current version of IrfanView is 4.25...

    Hi

You could try these steps HERE, in the past I have used a HEX editor to fix corrupted Jpg/JPEGs with varying degrees of sucess *but do copy the files to a temp folder first and use the copies to do this*

Althernatively try different image editors as some can possibly handle corrupted headers, which will give you the option then to save to a uncorrupted file, list of image editors and viewers http://majorgeeks.com/downloads37.html

Outside chance if you dont have Photoshop on your PC or know someone that has it, is to try the online version of Photoshop as its at times good at opening corrupted images https://www.photoshop.com/

I uploaded the newer version of Infram view and now my tool bar is blacked out and the writting in the buttons cannot be read. LOL...

Does it make a difference if the extemsion is in CAPS vs lower case? All the files have upper case .JPG.

The dollar signs are not AFFIXED on the front of the names, but actually IN PLACE OF the first character, right? like $om, $ad, $ister, $rother...?

I went through this on a recovery way back in the DOS days. Not sure how I went about it, but I do recall the "header replaced by $" concept.

Does straight-up replacing the first letter do anything?

Again, make COPIES first, then fiddle with those. And concentrate on that first character - that's where the secret lies, IIRC.

I remember those days too, but not the process. Replaceing the first letter with what I knew it to be didn't do anything.

That was my first thought too, just replace the first letter. unfortunately it didn't work.
