Color Changing Display

Yesterday, we had a power issue at my school. When the power was restored, 6 monitors have an issue with their monitors. I am assuming that this problem is related to the power outage, because I have to go on what the teachers tell me.

The monitors change colors. The colors vary from monitor to monitor, for example one changes for red to green to a different red to a different green. This happens from the moment the computer is turned on, so I don't think that it is software related.

If this doesn't explain the problem well enough, I'll post a video and put up a link.

The PCs are Dell Optiplex 755s and the monitors are ES170s. Thank you for your help.

    Hi

What I would check is the monitors cable for them being damaged, use a known good one to test each of the affected monitors, then at least you can rule out the cable.

Do they stay these colours or do then settle to the normal colour of the Windows desktop?

It is more like a flashing colored overlay. You can see what the display is showing but over it is the color. It flashes, then fades, then another color flashes.

    I'll check the cable though.

I've checked monitor cables and swapping the monitors to totally different machines. This issue is in the monitors. I've tried doing monitor resets. I'm probably going to have to call it in to dell.

    Greetings, Swami Godd...

I've never seen a cable go bad because of a power outage, and certainly not six of them at once...that being said, your problem's obviously got to be something in common with the six machines, and most likely caused by the power event...

Were these machines on any UPS or surge suppressors? If so, check those out...

If there is a degauss function on the monitor, try that...

Maybe that will help explain the issue better. Thank you for the help. I put music over the classroom audio. Nobody wants to hear children making noise.

    Hi

Not come across that occurance before, but quick question is the power light on the LCD, the normal constant green or is it flashing yellow/amber?

My best guess looking at the video you posted (good idea BTW to give us an idea of what your seeing) is that the power outage and potential spike in power has killed either the inverter or input board or the controller board.

I would call Dell as they likely have seen this before, even if only in the lab, will need to get past the first tier support agent you speak too and get to an engineer.

I wonder whether those computers might all be infected with some malware that's causing the abnormal color change on the monitors. And, I wonder whether one of those computers could be reformated and Windows reinstalled, as a test?

He swapped the monitors to different computers that did not have a problem with the monitor and the monitors in question still acted up on a different computer so it isn't something on the 6 computers, like malware. Reinstalling windows is not called for here.

    Hey there,

Looks like a bigger version for the monitor recieving signal or out of sync...
Any chance of system restore resetting it?
If these had drivers installed did these get corrupted? Is reinstalling these drivers or completely removing the drivers / monitor an option?
Then again they may have just been Zapped?
Would check the Dell website for that brand / model, see if there is a manual that may indicate what the colors represent.

G luck with this one, let us know what the outcome is. :wave

Right, I overlooked that fact they had already tried swapping monitors to different computers.

    Please read:

This applies to your suggestion as well. Software is not the issue.

Agreed - I'm really interested in any Dell response about the monitors, because a lot of people use Dells in my area, and we have dirty power problems constantly here...

Sorry about the length of time it's taken to reply. We've been working on a sever at the office and it has been hectic.

I tried to do a windows repair on a system, which didn't fix the problem. I recorded a few more videos, which still show the same problem. Here is a funny thing. If I disconnect the monitor from a computer, it doesn't pulse. I'll post the videos to show you everything that I have tried.

I am going to attempt to contact dell, and I'll let you know how that conversation goes.

First of all I wanted to thank everyone for the help that they offered.

Now, for the issue. I contacted dell, and prepared myself for a long grueling battle with a Dell Rep. I gave them the service code for my pc. I explained that this was happening on multiple monitors and that I'd tried switching a good monitor with the computer and hooking a good computer to the bad monitor. The issue is in the monitor.

They didn't ask any other questions. They offered to replace all of the faulty monitors, free of charge.

Replacing faulty hardware with Dell has never been this easy. I kinda feel like I wasted a lot of time trying to solve an issue that they would have fixed so easy.

I did ask if they had any ideas as to what the issue might be. Their response: "Something in the panel is off."

So all of those Youtube videos for nothing.

I still wanted to thank everyone though.

That's amazing, Swami Godd - one more reason I rank Dell as #1, especially when recommending a manufacturer to prospective clients...

Thanks for the feedback, and good luck!
