I'm having a problem changing detail on the user accounts. There are two on the computer, One is an admin account and one is a standard account, the problem is that neither of them will allow me to make changes such as name/picture changes or delete an account.

Is there anything that I can do to remedy this?

    Hi miss.poppins,

Uhh, we can't help you too much unless we know what operating system you're using.

WinXP Home, WinXP Pro, Vista etc.

what happens when you try to change the accounts? Do you receive an error message at all?

I assume you are trying to make the changes through the Control Panel, Admin Tools (Users) while logged in with an administrative account.

Ok, so i'm still having no luck with this and its preventing me from doing stuff on the computer. Like, if i need to go to control panel and change anything, it denies access...

Would re-formatting help and if so, how di i do it?

    Try this:

Right click on "computer" or "My computer" (forget which it is in vista) and choose "manage".

If you can get access to this, choose "local users and groups" from the list on the left and double-click on the "users" folder in the main window, then double-click on the admin account name, then click on the "member of" tab, and verify that the account is a member of administrators, power users, users, and backup operators.

I know this is a lot, but it may help if the account have had permissions removed somehow.

Also, if all else fails try:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313222

Had to do something similar to this, when a group policy setting went bad for our sheriff laptops at work.

Also, I think this may be a policy issue:

    Either here:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies

    or here:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies

Ok, I got into "Manage" but there was no option for "Local users and groups" and not "User" folder on the left. So i wasn't able to do this.

I'll try "If all else fails from teh fool.

    Thanks though.

Can't do this either. Tried "Fix it for me" but it says that there is a promlem with my something or other package and I tried fix it myself but nothing happens.

What do i do with those policy link things you have supplied?

Re-formatting sounds like the best way forwards at the moment.

If you have any data to recover that you cannot through Vista then take a look at using a Linux live CD. This is basically a CD-ROM that you boot from that will give you a fully functioning operating system with access to all drives. If you need it, try this one: http://www.ubuntu.com/

I don't understand. I'm not even sure how to re-format.

Do I need to remove all my photo's, video's and docs first?

It would be a good idea to remove your document firs otherwise they will be lost.

Burning them to DVD may be the most cost effective option for you as you can then keep the DVDs as a backup in case you need to recover them again in the near future.

Don't worry about the Linux Live CD, that was just a suggestion to get your documents off if you cannot do it through Vista.

I will walk you through reformatting once you have removed your documents from the computer.
