    Hi everyone
Listen I have a problem. I have a compaq laptop cq60 and frequently my touchpad freezes. I just noticed today that when I looked up the mouse info in the control panel under hardware there is no hardware. It seems that for whatever reason the mouse or touchpad ( synaptics V7.0 Port 2 ) is not there. I have to turn the computer on and off again a few times before the touchpad works again. The hardware for the touchpad has returned in the control panel.
    Little help!
    Thanks.

I don't know if there would be an entry for it in device manager but look, and if there is one you could try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers for it. Other than that, take your laptop to a laptop tech and have him check to see if the touch pad ribbon is secure and not damaged or shorted.

    Greetings, derkins...

First thing that comes to mind is a corrupted driver, which should be easily resolved by hitting the HP site and downloading and installing a new copy - there may even be an update for your machine...

I don't have a laptop handy, but isn't there a touchpad disable button on your keypad? On most models, it's located in the space bar/touchpad region - you might try checking that, see if it's sticking...

It's also possible, of course, that the touchpad disable function is flaky...

***Oops - sorry, biogenesis - didn't see you in time...

thanks for the reply. i have updated the drivers and i have received the message that the most recent and suitable driver is already installed on the computer. the touchpad is not locked ( tried that first not to look stupid ) and i think the best thing to do is take it back to where we bought it. it is still under warranty but at the moment i am studying physiotherapy and need the laptop for notes and practice exams and i am worried that they will keep it for too long a period. i will try uninstalling and reinstalling the driver.
    thanks for your help.

Agreed: if it's still under warranty, I'd definitely take it back...

I commiserate with you on the need for a machine: my youngest son is finishing his second year of med school, and he would probably croak if his Dell laptop were to explode...seems like you could express the time importance to the vendor...

    Good luck!

You could always get a small usb mouse. :)

I agree with biogenesis, most touchpads are worthless. You need a small USB mouse connected to get any use out of a pointing device.
