    Help. :cry

I just spilled about a half cup of coffee on the Keyboard of my laptop. I immediately shut the power off, turned it upside down (keyboard down), wiped it off.

    Advice please. :(

I don't want to open it up....so advice besides that.

I don't even know how much, if any, coffee got in.

I did remove the battery. and yes, the new one. :(

I just looked at the link. At least I did all the initial stuff correctly.

Ugh! I guess maybe I'll take it to a shop today if I can't find out how to open it myself. :cry

I suggest you just prise the keys off gently (they will clip back on) and allow it to dry naturally. If you need the laptop in a hurry, a hair dryer held a good distance away from it should speed the process up.

Airing cupboards are usually good for this sort of thing, although it's advised to wait at least a week before trying to turn it on again.

I think that's what I'm going to do and hope for the best. What's an airing cupboard, though?

I'm going to let it dry for a week or so and just use my old laptop.

You'll be able to download a servicing manual for your laptop which will show you where all the screws are and in which order to remove them.

I've fixed loads of them and I've never not found a PDF service manual.

Its usually this order, remove all plastic covers, add in cards and battery everything that unplugs which will expose all the 'secret' screws, remove screws, remove plastic top around keyboard, remove keyboard screws at either side then you can unplug keyboard and remove to do whatever you want with.

There's usually some secret screws that were under the keyboard once these are removed the bottom plastic of the laptop can be removed.

    Happy hunting:)

ugh....I don't want to do that though. I really don't think any got in. If I let it dry out for a week, it should be fine right?

Hot water tank cupboard, over here anyway, old fashioned now, before tuble dryers came along the hot water tank was in a cupboard where you could finish off slightly damp clothes ect.

They don't do this anymore because insulation around the tanks is much improved so the cupboard stays cold and it causes damp.

    Ah, okay. Thanks Rik.

Jeez, I am so unhappy about this. So damn stupid of me.

It all depends where the coffee went, coffee takes ages to dry in a confined space and even then it never really completely dries without alot of heat, just stays sticky for ages.

    :sigh: okay

So what if I take it to a shop? What will they do?

  12. Heyyou

    Heyyou Private E-2

I would turn it upside down and apply a hairdryer from underneath for a while. That may speed up the drying process before damage is done. I would still wait a week before firing it up though.

Should is the operative word here...

Question: How much sugar and milk do you take in your coffee? Black coffee is just a liquid, let it dry off completely, and you're fine, like water. Milk and sugar lingers, and too much sugar can end up drying into a "glaze" over the keyboard--that would be the dry residue that wiki page is talking about. I suggest letting it dry completely, over several days, and then inspect it for any residue left over, that will need to be removed before turning the laptop back on.

If you take it to a shop they will most likely take it apart and clean off anything they see left on it with alcohol or deionized water, and then dry all the parts before putting them back together. Important to consider: If they do it, it won't void the warranty. If you do it, it might.

In the link dsl gave me, it says do Not use a hair dryer. Something about causing static.

No sugar. Artificial sweetener. I use half and half...I don't know, about a tablespoon.

I really really don't feel comfortable opening up computers.

    No sugar! Good news :)

I didn't read the wiki that closely, but I wouldn't want to use a hair dryer because it will blow dust and possibly also the coffee deep into the laptop. Most modern hair dryers put a bunch of ions in the air before releasing it, increasing static (speeds up the drying process, supposedly), and washing it in static is probably not good for a laptop. :)

As DLS said these LT's are fairly sealed. I've done it a few times on mine ! My daughter's done it many time on her HP Tx2000 Tablet with cold coffee or hot chocolate :(
Each time I did it, I turned the lappy upside and used my mouth as a vacuum cleaner :-D I know that's daft, but got a lot of Johnnie Black back!!
    I'm sure Uma is fine.
    Cheers..

hahaha...the funny thing was is that was going to be the title of my thread...Coffee spilled on Uma! Help! I figured it wouldn't get viewed though. :-D

Uma will be fine. I know it! I'm going to take her today to the shop I go to and just make sure nothing got in and maybe have the keyboard cleaned off. I'll just use my old laptop for a week or so.

    Thanks sikvik

    You and me both! :-D

hahahaha BOOM...I'm on with HP now to find recommended service places. He says to me Best Buy can do repairs. I said no way. :-D He's looking for other places.

The shop I use, I called and didn't get a good feeling from. I asked price and she says 'it depends on what's damaged'. I said I don't think anything will be, I just want it cleaned out. She replies 'well, the mobo or hdd could be damaged and need replaced'. That could be true, but I have no interest in taking it to a place that is going to tell me something is damaged right off the bat.

  23. Rikky

Rikky Wile E. Coyote - One of a kind

That's the problem with taking it to a shop, usually you get a new part whether you like it or not as they make most of their money on mark ups on parts.

What you can do is removed the HD,its a really simple procedure on most HP's because they have a HD slot so its one screw to remove the plastic cover then just pull the HD out,you can even plug it straight into your desktop comp just connect the sata and power connectors, once this is done your can browse your files to check its working then either put it back or give it to them without the hard drive so they can't go through your data.

So the funniest thing...I'm still on with the guy from HP (really really nice guy) and he comes back and the first 'HP Partner' that can service....my husband's company. :-D I said, ummm, they are a corporation. He said they come up as being able to do service. I may ask hubby to talk to their IT.

The other problem...my laptop is not their basic laptop. It's a 'specialty' one.

This guy is recommending that I let it dry out, see how it goes and if the keyboard is damaged from the coffee.

@ Rikky...you wanna come over and remove it for me?? LOL I don't want to touch it.

  25. Rikky

Rikky Wile E. Coyote - One of a kind

Of course I'd come over and fix it,personally I would strip it down and clean it all before you turn it on again.

If I do it you get a bag of free bonus parts once its back together.

:-D Kinda like the leftover screws that 'aren't needed'?

Sadly, I didn't get the Accidental Damage warranty. :( The only plus is that I bought it with American Express. They have a 90 day money back warranty for anything you purchased with their card. I've used it once before on a pair of sunglasses that fell in the ocean the day I bought them. I've never tried it with anything of this cost, but it covers anything...loss, damage, stolen.

    Thanks dar.

Well, if memory serves me right it hasn't been 90 days since you posted about receiving the Lappy and all American can say is no so you won't be any worst then right now.;)Doesn't hurt to try.
