    Hello:

I just recently migrated from IE7 to IE8 (Win XP) and have the following problem:

In IE7, I used to be able to see the list of the most recently/used web address from a pull-down menu next to the address bar. Now that IE8 is installed, it is gone. I click the pull-down arrow, but nothing happens and it is clear to me that it is not saving any address.

I know this is kind of the opposite of what people usually want, but for me this feature was very helpful.

    Thanks for any help

Check IE settings>options and check your settings you might have the settings to clear on closing browser !

I appreciate having my browsing history too, because I frequently want/need to find a site that I accessed in the past. In fact, I have mine set to go back 90 days --- You can even set a longer time if you wish.

First go to IE, Tools, Internet Options. On first screen in the Browsing History section, as rustyjack said, be sure you DON'T have "Delete browsing history on exit" checked. Then click "Settings. At the very bottom of the screen in the History section, at "…Number of days to keep history…" change the number to however-many number of days you wish to keep your browsing history.

I have been battling for DAYS to no avail. All my Internet Options settings are correct.

Simple fact is that when I install IE8 the dropdown menu of typedurls is disabled.

    When I ununstall IE8- stepping back to IE7 - it reappears .

    Soooo frustrated!!!

Been googling my little head off.

    HELP!!!!

chgenrich, start a new thread. Don't drag up a thread from 2009 and add your problem to it.
    Start here: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=21
click the new thread button, state your problem and mention what version of windows you are running. Also mention when the problem started and what if anything you have done to try and fix it.

just in case he doesnt start a new thread try this:
Select Tools > Internet Options > General tab > Press Delete button under Browsing history section > Uncheck History checkbox > Press Delete button.

Here is another way of working around this.

I would download Mozilla Firefox. Once you install it, it will ask you to import IE favorites, which you should do. Then since you have XP, you can completely uninstall IE from your operating system. Then I would delete the Internet Explorer folder from your computer all the way down to the registry, and then, I would reinstall it. Then try to see if it's remember history from there.

    Let us know please!

unimatrix001 - yorare saying that by deleting all the typedurls in the registry (same as deleting them off the list) and by deleting my history, then the pull-down menu will function in IE8?

plodr - thought I was pretty clear - have been working for days - thus the problem started days ago (as opposed to weeks or months etc.) Sorry I neglected the OS - it's XPSP3, IE7/8/7/8/7/8/7 with multiple fixes and hacks found throughout the 'net thrown in between; (including everything on this thread - except deleting everything.)

Please let me know the difference between posting to a live, old, thread that has never been answered (the way it looks to me); and copying the entire thread into a new one with the same old info?

Where I come from we treat people who make mistakes with respect, not like little children who need fixin'. We simply move their thread to where it belongs and kindly mention to the poster what we did.

motc7 - a new browser is clearly an option however wouldn't it be more accurate to say you can't, or don't want to, answer my question?

I've been around discussion boards for almost twenty years and will opt for respect or silence if I 'druther not answer the users question.

    Thanks anyway,
    chgenrich

chgenrich: that answer was straight from a microsoft answer page. Read through the list of answers and this seemed to be the one that fixed the problem for those users. Myself i dont use ie only for specific sites that require it, (ie. windows update). I normally use Mozilla Firefox. have not had any problems with that browser. Here is another answer that might possibly work.

    thanks unimatrix001,

First of all I despise autocomplete. To get to most of the 'typedurl' links; I
need to type most of the link anyway. Defeats the purpose. Just clicking
an arrow, receiving a pulldown, and selecting a long url off the list is much
    more efficient.

I appreciate your time and efforts. Unfortunately in IE8 that selection, among
several others, was grayed out. It was clearly the obvious choice.

It's clear that M$ did a mess of changes in the whole area of AutoComplete
between vers. 7 - 8 and 8 - 9, and people are disgusted in general.

Did not try CTRL+o "Open" list. It normally holds the same information as in
typedurl. It seems to be a solution in several places.

Another Improvement that turns out to be a cluster, compliments of M$

While not optimal, if I get the 'umption to reinstall IE8 I will give it a try.

    Thanks again,
    chgenrich
