Jerky update when looking around in games

    Hi,

I've quite recently rebuilt/upgraded my computer from an older XP-based one and now I've come to try my games on it, I'm experiencing a problem in many of them (especially the older ones) like Quake III and Unreal Tournament 2003/4.

I have most games set on the highest settings and the screen updates fine when walking forwards, with no noticeable hitches or hangs, however, whenever I use the mouse to look around/turn corners, the screen is juddering all over the place and looks terrible. It seems like part of the problem is with screen tearing but I'm not sure. I tried using keys to look instead of the mouse and it is less noticeable as the screen moves quickly instead of in small increments, but I still noticed screen tearing and the framerate didn't look silky smooth like when walking or standing still.

My new computer is running Windows Vista with the following specs:

Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4 Ghz
    nVidia GeForce 9600 GT
    4GB RAM

I have no idea what could be causing this but I've tried turning mouse smoothing on and off, I've also tried different mice, as well as ensuring vertical sync is enabled. I've been updating my nVidia drivers whenever new ones are released but nothing has fixed the problem yet... Recently, when looking for a solution to FEAR Extraction Point having tremendously slow performance (regardless of lowering settings) I found a post discussing disabling Human Interface Compliant Devices in device manager and uninstalling Logitech drivers - this fixed that particular problem, but hasn't affected this 'looking around' jerkiness in other games - I've heard Monolith's engine is notoriously lazily-coded, but maybe something as seemingly equally unrelated as this HiD thing could be the cause?

This problem affects about half of the games I've tried, bad ones being Call Of Duty1/Quake III/Unreal Tournament 2003 and 2004, while a handful of the games I've installed are okay like 2009's Wolfenstein, Half-Life 1, Serious Sam 1 and Call Of Duty 2.

I hope someone could suggest possible causes for this. It's driving me nuts as loads of classics are essentially unplayable in this state.

    Thanks

  2. Have you tried updating your drives/reinstalling your drivers for your gfx card?

try running to settings on the lowest quality to see if it still happens and we can trouble shoot from there?

Are these games you have ran fine before on this same system?

    Tried updating or reinstalled Directx?

Go into the nVidia control panel (found in control panel) and in the graphics options for 3d applications setting vertical sync onto forced?

Any more information that might help? I will do my best to help :)

Thank you very much for replying. Yes, I've updated my drivers numerous times (as each new one became available - I've been blighted with this problem for ages).

I've also tried running everything on the lowest settings and it's still the same.

I thought about updating directx but I checked dxdiag and it lists directx 11 installed.

    Hi

Try right clicking the shortcut to these games then choose Properties > Compatability tab and choose XP SP3 after ticking the box for Run this program in compatability mode for:

    and see if that helps.

Also as they are old games, DirectX 11 which is standard for Vista, may not like them but you can install DirectX 9c in Vista which may give the compatability those games need, DirectX 9c HERE (all it does is add the Runtime files needed for some games, even my COD Modern Warefare 2 asks for this to be installed)

Thanks for the suggestion and link - these files won't mess up my regular Direct X 11 install then? Only add to it?

    Hi Ronald

No as many games do ask for the DirectX 9 runtime files and dlls, I had DirectX 9c on my Vista install and have it installed on Windows 7 as Modern Warfare 2 asked for it to be installed when installing the game as I mentioned, I would not have mentioned it as a suggestion if it was one of my experimental try fixes.

But what you can do is to create a System Restore point as a backup before installing.
