...you promise to help fixing someone's computer in the evening after a long stressed out work day. You head over there, chat and accept the offered dinner since they're family and they want to give you something for working on the laptop. You're tired, you really just want to get it over with and go home, and after dinner you can finally get to the laptop and start it up... and it turns out you barely need to do anything after all.

Five minutes of actual effort, most of it spent watching a progress bar. Nice. :)

As tired as you were you just made a family happy and that's good. Mimsy I don't care what the rest say about you, you're a great person in my book.;)
I use to do that for my best friend before she passed. Get home from working out side all day and 5 minutes in the door the phone would ring. She would try to pay for the services with food money or anything she thought I might like of course the only thing I accepted was drinks, snacks and lots of hugs. So I know how you feel.(some what)
You did a good deed Mimsy, feel proud of yourself.

LOL It helps that all I had to do was install Advanced System Care and uncheck a bunch of start-up entries...

The laptop I was working on is my dad-in-law's main PC, and mom-in-law wanted me to look at it because he gets frustrated at how slow it is to boot up. As it turns out, he has been reading up on these things and learned how to practice smart surfing, defrags regularly and keeps his security suite up to date and does monthly scans with it, so I just turned off a bunch of auto-starting updaters, told him to run ASC every two weeks for tune-ups, and called it good. :)

And I'm not sure I'm that good of a person. After all, they offered payment in the form of home-made mashed potatoes, pork roast, tasty gravy, and German lager... :yum

Very kind of you, Mims, to do it after work. Particularly when it's usually a day's worth of work fixing the crap on other's computers. You got lucky for sure that your FIL is one of the few to try to keep it nice and clean and neat.

Of course you're a good person --- that's one premium reward --- that surely can't go to any old shlub! :-D

Hmm, I would have had to take a nap first after all that goodness before hitting the keyboard.;) :-D I know it to be a pleasure to work on a machine that someone actually takes care of as in regular maintenance as opposed to someone who will not heed one's advice to keep a clean rig. I also get a great meal and some libation too and I don't mind doing it either.:)

I refuse to see/fix 3rd repeats for the same crap anymore, I just tell them I have no idea and send them off to a tech who is going to charge to reformat the drive!:-D Screw 'em!

Heh. You're nicer than I am. I do the reformat and charge them so I get the money. LOL

I actually don't mind going over to work on the PCs in their house, tired or not. For one, they remember what I tell them about things to do to prevent future problems (I'm a big believer in fishing lessons), and they never expect me to drop everything and immediately come over and fix computers for free just because we're family.

We all have "friends" we only hear from when they have computer problems... it's a very nice change of pace when the effort and knowledge it's taken so long to acquire is appreciated rather than taken for granted. :)

Especially when the appreciation is oven baked and has a beer bottle next to it. :drink

I stop at second offense. They come to me again, and I say..."Bummer, guess we gotta FFR (old tech term for fdisk, format, reinstall)."

Gets them off my back for a while.

I meant when it comes to family, no charge, no harassment, no telling them to their face how stupid they are... ;)
