We are buying 1 Desktop for gaming
and 2 Desktop mostly for video editing.
Kids are probably paying half so they treat it well.
Both Mid-range price up to $900.
    Windows 7 on all three

The laptop is replacing the slow one that work provided that is now broken.

Desktop 1- Teen who plays World of War-Craft & The Battle for Middle-Earth & more.
We have one flat screen monitor already.

Desktop 2- Teen who does video editing, photos and music. (He would prefer a Mac but we don't want to pay for that)
Wants to do a little more than average user does for video editing.

    Laptop- Durable
    $600 plus

We would love 1 Mac but don't want to pay the price.
I don't mind building one desktop although I've not done this before.

    What would you buy?

Okay here are some Aussie references for you to ponder (being so far away from everything we have become "very resourceful"):

    General PC suggestions:

    Gaming:

    Video/Editing:

You haven't mentioned whether you will build or have pre-built?

Will look into some laptops if you can define "what you need it for".

-Pricing will vary (country t country),
-I5 is good for "most gamers",
-ATI is the only one with Dx11 atm (used w Win7)
-Intel may perform better for $,
    -SSD must be a consideration.

Ask more questions for more answers.

Thank you both for all the help!

Since I posted last we have been offered 2 free Power Mac G5's in a few months.
If I have figured out the specs right they have
Mac OS X 10.4.11 on both
    Power Mac 11.2
    1 GB memory
    160 GB hard drive
    PC2-4200U-444 speed

    Power Mac 7.2
    2 GB memory
    150 GB hard drive
    PC3200U-30330 speed

I don't know much about Mac's but I do use Adobe Photoshop 6.0 (professional) on my own desktop.
So I don't know what we can run on these 2 macs.

If my son used one of these mac's for video editing and photoshop I would think that it would be fine. He wanted to buy final cut pro.

As far as the laptop goes.
I'm not sure what I will use it for.
    Typical internet and email use.
    Excel spread sheets.

    Some light to medium gaming.

So, I think we could buy a laptop.
    Use both Power Mac's
May have to buy a desktop for the
    this one.
Desktop 1- Teen who plays World of War-Craft & The Battle for Middle-Earth & more.
We have one flat screen monitor already.

    Does this sound right?

1 GB ram is fine for lite use however for video editing 2-4gb is more standard. You stated he does a little more then standard video editing. However as it seems like Final Cut needs a Intel mac to work.

Also for gaming Windows is a better setup imo. Mac doesn't have very many games on it. WoW does run on mac however I'm unsure if those other games support mac. You probly can use windows on the mac to run those games. However once again 1gb ram is low for gaming. 2-4 GB is more reasonable for games.

The CPU in the mac's is old and may show signs of it's age in apps. However for lite use it should be just fine.

Hope I was able to help

The video card is low end. If you are going to spend $950 on a computer I would look somewhere else for a better deal or spend a bit more on a better system.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227188 tho they are out of stock will be a really great gaming pc.

May also want to look at http://ibuypower.com

It seems that HP are having "huge" clearance sales in Australia and I would certainly be shopping around if considering them:

All the pricing is in AUD.

I think you miss the point they are probably doing something similar in the US........normally we are treated as a "backwater" and it is probably last years stock. I am sure you would have many online Auction/Clearance sites in the US as well (apart from that moronic joke called ebay).
