I thought I had it clean. What can you see?

One of our workstations had problems with a mailer. It would immediately start sending out mails, which were blocked by Symantec's Email scanner. The screen would fill up with error messages from our Symantec Antivirus Corporate.

I isolated the machine and followed the Read & Run First. Still no combofix, obviously, but the rest of the logs are included. It found some Trojan Droppers, Vundo, and Spyware.Passwords, but not much else.

I scanned/rebooted several times with MBAM and SAS. Both came back clean, as did Symantec, so I plugged the machine back into the network.

Lo and behold the little mailer windows came back. I uninstalled Symantec Antivirus and installed Vipre instead. It found two copies each of Trojan.Win32.Hiloti.gen(v) and Trojan.Win32.Generic@SB.0, all in Windows\Temp.

Take a look at the logs and see what my next steps could be. The scans are now all coming back clean. I was debating re-installing SAV so I would get all of the popups if the mailer is somehow still present.

    Thanks in advance for looking.

Now let's try the beta version of ComboFix which is named KittyFix.exe

Download ComboFix from http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/Beta/KittyFix.exe and save it to your Desktop.

Note: This is a beta version of combofix and might be unstable but tests done so far have proved it works well

Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop and run from the desktop and not any other folder on your computer.
    • Now Exit/Close/Disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Close any open browsers and any other programs you might have running.
    • Double click on kittyfix.exe & follow the prompts.
      • If you are using windows XP It might display a pop up saying that "Recovery console is not installed, do you want to install?" Please select yes & let it download the files it needs to do this
    • When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please attach the "C:\ComboFix.txt" to your next message.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze.

Any idea what the below new file is from?
    Code:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\
    iqnfz.sys Dec 16 2009 697856 "iqnfz.sys"

when I attempted to remove this file with pretty much any method, it gave the message "unable to delete, this file is unreadable or corrupt", which threw me a curve. Filekiller wouldn't touch it, or another delete program I can't remember now

After posting my first post, other scans came up clean, so I dropped it back on the network and watched my firewall, reporting on port 25. Sure enough, it was attempting to spray a ton of spam all over, so something was still functioning. That file was all I could guess was doing it, so I figured out how to remove it.

I ended up using Avenger to get rid of that file. Upon reboot it was moved to the c:\avenger directory and I deleted it. I rebooted again and the spam spray had stopped. I'm sure there are more components left, but this crippled the infection.

This machine is at work, so I will try shortly to log onto it remotely and run the procedures you outlined in the above post. Understand that this PC was critical for one of our departments, so I had to get it back in place and working, and I took the removal step without waiting for instructions. Hopefully I can log on to it and run the fixes in a few minutes, then report back with logs.

Here is the combofix/kittyfix log. It ran pretty quickly.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 2
    LiveUpdate 3.1 (Symantec Corporation)

Now we need to use ComboFix to the driver related to the deleted iqnfz.sys file.

Download the real combofix.exeto your Desktop so we can do the below.

    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Here are the logs. I completed the rest of the steps and everything went well.

I will say, however, that I went to c:\MGTools in the Run box (instead of manually opening up the C drive) and I believe it ran MGTools again instead of just GetLogs.bat. Force of habit, really. Obviously running MGTools.exe calls the GetLogs.bat file, but I hope I didn't skew anything by forgetting the little "\" at the end.

I checked my firewall logs, and I don't see anything out of the ordinary coming from the PC. I will continually monitor it, though.

    Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thanks for all the help. I went through the uninstall processes and everything looks good. I left CCleaner for the user in hopes she'll use it weekly; I'm looking at a corporate purchase of it now. The Vipre AV/AM is going to be my desktop weapon of choice for protection, so I'll continue to monitor how it performs.

Thanks again; couldn't have done it without you.

also as info, I'm supposing Kittyfix was removed when ComboFix was removed, as they are in essence the same. I ran the /uninstall switch on it, and nothing happened so I deleted the .exe from the desktop.

Yes effects from it were cleaned up by uninstalling ComboFix. Running MGclean.bat would have removed anything else left over.

    You're welcome. Surf safely!
