    Happy Holidays!

    Attempting to work through the README process on a coworker's computer. Looks like they had AVG running at some point, but I don't see it running any more. No telling how long it's been without protection. Here are the notes from the README:

    The Administrator account and one of the user accounts has a minimized Taskbar that I can't resize. Drag & Drop functionality seems broken, as does Copy/Paste (I had to use cmd copy to copy files from a USB drive).

    Could not remove/update Java because the Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. Installed and ran CCleaner on the two user accounts and the Administrator account. Enabled viewing of hidden files and folders. Set MSConfig to Normal Startup. Didn't see any malware in Add/Remove Programs.

    Could not install SUPERAntiSpyware due to the previously mentioned Windows Installer Service problem.

    Ran the installer for MBAM after renaming the file, which ended with the error message (message displayed twice):
    Trying to run MBAM produced the same error, and it fail to run. I don't see any .NET installations on this computer, does MBAM require it?

    ComboFix got to the disclaimer, then produced a window titled "Error", with just an "info speech bubble" icon and no text, with only an "OK" button. I clicked it, and the computer restarted. Upon rebooting into Windows, ComboFix began to run. The machine did not have the Recovery Console installed, and it was not connected to the Internet, so that step failed, but the scans continued. During the process, an error window came up stating that "PEV.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close." I waited until the end of ComboFix's run to click since clicking may interfere with the program. ComboFix restarted the computer, some previously blocked programs started automatically, and ComboFix produced a log. I could not install the Recovery Console using the provided instructions because Drag & Drop seems to not be working. A command-line version of the instructions would probably be helpful for cases like this.

    I ran RootRepeal, and it produced a log. No problems.

    I ran MGTools, everything ran except for processdll.exe (because .NET is not installed). If the output from processdll.exe, I will get the offline installer for .NET and install it.

    Drag & Drop is still broken, as is Copy & Paste. The Taskbar doesn't show any programs along it. Minimizing programs turns them into mini-toolbars. Logs are attached. Please advise on the next steps. Thanks!

    This is a business machine and you have Limewire installed???

    Let's start with this:

    Please use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 2

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Now let's use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    BEE686B9-4C84-4487-9D72-9F40F051E973

    FCopy::
    C:\MGtools\temp\XPSP3\eventlog.dllmg | c:\windows\system32\eventlog.dll

    File::
    c:\docume~1\Bob\LOCALS~1\Temp\A.tmp
    c:\windows\system32\jwbisjcr.xml
    C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\{7B02EF0B-A410-4938-8480-9BA26420A627}.job
    C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\{BB65B0FB-5712-401b-B616-E69AC55E2757}.job
    c:\windows\system32\1031z.exe

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet001\Services\JWBISJCR]

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet001\Services\{BEE686B9-4C84-4487-9D72-9F40F051E973}]

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the prvevious file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now download and install:
    Java Runtime 6

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    No, it's a coworker's home machine for her husband and daughters.

    Tried that:

    Can't do this as Drag & Drop does not work on this machine:
    If there are command-line equivalents of the Drag & Drop operations that are normally used for ComboFix, then I can proceed.

    I can't install/uninstall anything that uses the Windows Installer Service. JRE installers do, as does SUPERAntiSpyware.

    Some days are better than others.

    Can you create a new account with admin. privileges?

    Have you tried accessing safe mode to see if you can work in that mode?

    Here are options to try to fix your windows installer issue:
    Tell me if you can download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    If so, then try to:
    Extract+ avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * -Do not change any check box options!!
    * Take everything in the Quote box below and manually write it into the Input script here: part of the window: (Make sure you write it exactly as I have it.)

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    If you are able to do the above, then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\Avenger.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    The "User Accounts" window in Control Panel is a blank white window, so it seems not.

    I can access Safe Mode, but the Windows Installer Service does not work there either (by design, I believe). Symptoms (collapsed Task Bar, unable to move or expand even after unlocking it; blank User Accounts window; Drag & Drop not working; Copy & Paste not working) also appear in the Administrator account while in Safe Mode, so it seems that it is being affected as well.

    This looks like it's for removing partial/bad installations. I'm not exactly sure what I'd be looking for here or what installations I'd want to clean. However, msicuu2.exe refuses to run, and produces no errors about why it won't run. #94 on the second option gives two reg files, which one to use?

    Downloaded and ran The Avenger as instructed. PC rebooted itself twice afterward.

    Attached logs as requested.

    Let's have you try doing this:

    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    Now try downloading MBAM from here and tell me if it will run:
    http://mbam.malwarebytes.org/program/random.php

    Please try running the below online scan:

    http://www.superantispyware.com/onlinescan.html

    Reboot immediately after scanning if it finds and removes anything. Let me know if anything was found. It does not save a log.
    After running this and assuming it runs, then see if you can run other tools.

    Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\Avenger.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip
