I was having Google search links getting redicted so I followed instructions in one of the threads, (used Smart defrag, removed all programs not needed, use CCleaner, Spyware Doctor to remove Trojans etc)

Then when I got to the part of using ComboFix on the last start-up the computer freezes when it gets to the screen that shows the Microsoft win flag and Windows XP logo.

I am on a HP s7600n PC with Win XP Media Edition service pack 3.

I can't get the system to reboot. I have to actually unplug the power to restart and then I can't get it to go to "Safe Mode".
When I select Safe Mode it keeps coming back to the same screen to select which mode.

My problems first started with my computer being taken over by the fake program "Internet Security 2010"
I used Malwarebytes and Spyware doctor to remove that problem and then after a day of everything being normal, whenever I did a search in Google or Yahoo the links get redirected.

    Please help

You should never follow instructions given in another thread. They were only given to that particular user for his/her PC. Only the READ & RUN ME FIRST cleaning procedure is generic and that should have been your starting point.

Smart Defrag and Spyware Doctor are not part of our cleaning process. Never have been and a defrag is not advisible if a PC has an infection.

I'm not sure I follow this. Does this mean that you actually ran ComboFix and then it rebooted your PC and during the startup after the reboot it hung? How long did you wait? Did ComboFix indicate it found anything especially rootkit activity?

Do you have your Win XP Media Ed SP3 boot CD? You will need it unless you follow the instructions for installing the Recovery Console with ComboFix as was recommended. You need to boot to the Recovery Console and try the below procedure to restore a registry hive from before the problem began:
