Like the subject says, I'm looking for a Pentium 4 socket 478 motherboard Max CPU supported 3.0 GHZ +. 800MHZ FSB. Ive been all over ebay and google shopping (lol) looking for such a board. I'd like to find one and not have to spend 100 + dollars on it, Seriously, it's a P4 board. So if anyone has any clue to where i can find one with in a reasonable price range please post, Thanks.

No Dell's, gateway, IBM's or any other such crappy boards. lol.

I can't say it defiately will but I can't see why it shouldn't, here is the product page:

    http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/mb/content.php?S_ID=283

From there is the Memory Support list, the problem is it should clearly state at the top of he RAM listing "Due to the fact that there are many RAM makes and models out there in the marketplace we have only been able to test a small amount of these and have "provided" a guide only"! That is what is indicated on Gigabyte product pages. A lot of the brands they do list I have never even heard of.

By the way that looks like a reasonable mobo and gives you a PCI-e x 16 slot.

I have built several of the biostar P4M900-M4, it has a pci express slot, the only 478 board that I know of that has it. I usuall use the prescott cpu,s found on the list. Double check and make sure your cpu is on this list http://www.biostar-usa.com/app/en-us/mb/cpu_support.php?S_ID=283

get the memory from the list as well http://www.biostar-usa.com/app/en-us/mb/memory_report.php?S_ID=283. geeks has everything, hope this helps. I know the samsung ddr2800 and pqi dd2800 from geeks work.

If you are looking for a cpu check http://www.starmicro.net/.

Yeah the pci-e is a deff plus, there other board on newegg has loads of cons though, I can get the board but i'll have to wait till i get about 20 dollars more to get the memory. I really wanna make sure though that My CPU will work in that board or it'd be a complete waste of money and time.

Here's another board I'm looking at although it doesn't have the PCI-E slot it's still a major upgrade from the board i have,

    http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=D865GLCLK-PB&cat=MBB

It links to supported CPU's but it's a bit confusing, i can't make out rather or not it can hold 3.0 GHZ + cpu's or not..

Yeah according to that chart, My cpu is not supported, so not only would i have to buy ddr2 ram but a supported CPU as well. That would be a bit too much for my budget atm. lol. So i guess now i need to know if that other board can hold up to a 3.0ghz CPU and rather or not my current SL6EB CPU is compatible. Any further help would be much appreciated.

Do you have the CPU out? You can read the sSpec ##### and identify it readily.

nah, it's in my machine, i have all the specs for it though, Intel® Pentium® 4 2.50 GHz SL6EB, http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SL6EB The SL6EB was not in the list of supported CPU's for the biostar board. I'm not sure if it'd work in that other board or rather or not that one can take CPU's up to 3.0ghz.

I think seeing that the CPU i have isn't supported for the biostarboard I can't get it due to lack of funds, I might be able to get the other board depending rather my CPU is compatible or not and if it can hold the 3.0GHZ's or not.

Kinda seems that with that biostar board there's no way around not spending a but load of money (more than i have) to get it going, Most of the Supported 2.8 - 3.0GHz P4's in that list either don't exist on ebay or they cost 50 dollars and more.
So now I'm at another dead end; One after another, lol!

Ok here's what I'm gonna do, I'm gonna try to get the biostar board and this cpu for now, I just need to find a good deal one some compattable 1gb ddr2 memory; I looked through there list and searched some of them but couldn't find anything; this is where i could use some help lol.. Other than that I'm plenty capable of searching my self...

    HELP!!?!?!?!?! :confused lol

that cpu will work and runs cooler than the prescots. you can get corsair or kingston value select ddr2 667 or 800 and it should work fine. Don't forget the thermal paste for the the cpu heatsink:) if you have a best buy in your town, get this http://www.bestbuy.com/site/ValueRA...dule/9414332.p?id=1218101178017&skuId=9414332

copy and paste "Crucial 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Desktop Memory Model CT12864AA667 - OEM" Paste it into the search on newegg, it should be the first in the list and it has 5 eggs.

I would just msg you but you have that disabled so anyway, i have a few more questions.

    1. would a 350w PSU work on that board?
    2. I know the board supports IDE, but will my IDE HDD's work??
    3. Will it fit in most ATX cases?
    4. This will be my first build, Ive heard that when buying a board and a case for it the power button/cord isn't always compatible, Any advice as far as that goes?
    5. You said you've built many PC's using these boards, Have you ever had any serious problems with them, Ive done a bit of research and there were a lot of DOA's and Boards lasting no more than a year and ports going out.

Btw that's not the same board, Just go to new egg and look at the socket 478 boards they only have two, both bio star, one cheaper; which is the one i have my eye on.

Ive already bought some thermal paste; lol needed some the other day.

I just noticed the diff, it's the same board but the cheaper one is Open box and i just researched what open box is; idk if it'd be a good idea for me to go with the open box or if i even get the non open box if it would be a good idea because i don't have the money to buy everything i need all at once and with out the parts i can't test it and if i can't test it with in what ever the time limit in returning things to new egg is; Id be stuck with it even if it's DOA.

    1. What is your current make and model number of your current system? and or system specs? You need a 12v 20+4 pin power supply. The biggest mistake people make when building is that they cheap out on the power supply.

    2. The board supports IDE

    3. This is a micro atx board and should fit in a atx case, I will know more when you send me the answer to #1

    4. If you have an older name brand system than it may give you a problem hooking up the front panel connectors, answer to number one will help me.

    5. I have never had a problem with these boards . The problem with them is the limited number of cpu's that it will support and people tend to put the wrong one in and when it doesn't work, they send them back. That is why I was adamant about the cpu you have.

What is your budget? What do you use the computer for? You may be better off going with a new build. I can help you there as well

You never know with an open box but you will be charged shipping on the open box and the savings does not justify it in my mind. Plus the fact you do not have everything ready to test, so I wouldn't advise it.

    1. Hp pavilion 504n (LOL) http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&docname=bph07971 My PSU isn't the original one, i had to buy a new one not too long ago, it's an Ultra LS350
    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3255390&CatId=1077

    3. would be nice if it'd work in this case so i don't have to buy a new one yet.

    4. yeah it's a bit old.

I honestly don't have no more than a hundred to spend, i was only looking to swap out the board, buy a cheap 1GB stick of memory along with that 25 dollar CPU i found, and hope everything would go in the case i have, all would be good. lol.

The only thing i do with my computer that takes a lot of CPU usage is play s.u.n.. http://sun.ijji.com/?next=sunmain

ok the power supply is o.k., it will work fine, although you are very limited in regards to a pci express video card due to the quality and wattage of it. The board / IO sheild should line up in the case o.k, the original is the same form factor uatx or mico atx. You may run into some issues with the front panel connectors though, the documentation is not good on this. You may have to get creative on hooking up your front panel connectors. Download the biostar manual http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/mb/content.php?S_ID=283# and look at page 13 and compare to your current setup. It should work but you may have to separate some of you wires.

  26. 3ntity

    3ntity Private E-2

I doubt i could re wire it with out possibly frying something lol. the psu issue is fine, ill just remember to buy a bigger one when i go using the pci-e slots; would a 400w do the trick?

Do you know if i could find just a power button/cable that would work; so i don't have to re wire? I don't care if it has to be left hangin there, i just need a way to turn the machine on when i get it together in order to test it with in the 30 day refund limit.

    Thanks.

    detroitdawg Private E-2

you don't need to hook any wires to get it to power on. you can take a small screwdriver and touch the two posts for where the power switch wire would go and it will turn on. If you look at the wires prior to taking them off, you should be able to figure it out, your not going to fry anything. some connectors have three slots but your new motherboard may have only two posts fir it... well most case their are only two wires on the connector with the middle one being a blank, it is easy to take a sharp small side cutter and trim these in half. the positive one is usually designated by a arrow, the other is the negative. just look at the biostar manual you downloaded and a compare to the board you have in there now.

I would take it all out of the case anyway and build it outside of your case to test. this is the proper way to do it in any event.

In terms of a quality power supply, I prefer in no particular order Antec, Corsair, and Seasonic. They are high quality, very reliable, and will protect your components. The higher the wattage doesn't mean they are better but that is another topic. If you decide you want better graphics than the onboard, I can help you decide.

You will not need a power button, just try and look at the biostar manual and your current setup. Take notes and pictures before you take it all out of the case, it is not as hard as you think. :)

    A few choices here.

You shouldn't have any major problems with the case. In two instances I used branded cases for a new build (and eMachines, and an HP case) and the main front panel connectors were standard. In one case I had to manually split a plug, but it was no problem.

Probably not. Remember, you're going to be putting in a new MB which will require different drivers for all the different hardware the new MB has on it.

3ntity- Don't know if you saw my replies to you over on the PC perspective forum so I'll post here too.

    I just got one of the P4M900-M4 boards. Using the parts from a Dell Optiplex GX270 (P4 2.4Ghz, 340Gb HD, DVD/RW, CoolMax 500w PSU) plus a 2Gb stick of DDR2 I got.
This board would not post at all, no beeps, no video output. Tried different memory, PSUs, nothing worked. Tech support at vendor I bought mobo & memory from (3BTech.net) said my CPU would work. Finally going thru the list on Biostar's Taiwan site I found that this board works with only 6 P4s and 7 Celerons. My P4 is a sSpec SL6PC, not on the list. Found a SL6S4 on eBay for $25, hope when that gets here it'll get this mobo up and running.
