Logitech Setpoint Slowdown - Alternatives?

I recently purchased a Logitech MX620 Cordless Laser Mouse and installed the program "Setpoint" by Logitech to manage the use of the extra buttons. While I enjoy the use of the horizontal scroll and three extra buttons, I noticed that KHALMNPR.exe (Setpoint's kernel) is really bogging my system down.

Is there any other good mouse button management software that doesn't hog as much system resources?

    Thanks,

I'm surprised to hear that. I've had a Logitech wireless keyboard & mouse combo for several years on my Windows XP Pro system and haven't had that type of problem with it. Of course, my version of SetPoint is surely older than yours.

Each manufacturer makes their own software to work with their products, so I don't believe other software, except perhaps Windows itself, is a viable option. Did you try using the mouse just with Windows, before installing SetPoint? I gather that would not allow horizontal scrolling and use of other features on the mouse.

Did you install SetPoint from a CD provided with the mouse, or was it from a download from Logitech's website? What version is it?

What are your hardware specs, i.e. for your computer? If you open Task Manager, does it show SetPoint heavily consuming CPU resources?

Did you have any other propriety mouse software installed, for a different mouse, before installing SetPoint? If so, did you uninstall it?

Thanks for the reply. Let me answer your questions.

Indeed I did. The system ran as normal as I could notice. It was only when I added the Setpoint software that the system really bogged down. Upon further study, it seems to only cause a really long bootup and occasional slowdown from the KHALMNPR.exe (which spikes to use >80% processor power).

Correct. I wanted the benefits of the horizontal scroll and paging buttons.

I installed the version from the Logitech website, version 4.80.103.

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, 2.20 GHz, 3.00 GB Ram (With a 4 GP SD Card used as a Ram Booster). If you want any other device spec, let me know.

This was the first propriety software I installed for a mouse.

Thanks again for getting back with me. After making a few small adjustments, it seems to spike less while actively working on something. The long bootup time is still there, but I've learned to just put the computer into hibernation instead of shutting it down.

I'm surprised to hear that. I have an older version of SetPoint installed; version 2.11.459. Task Manager shows it not causing any CPU usage. I wonder whether you'd get better results by uninstalling the downloaded version you installed and installing from the CD that came with the mouse.
