Just got a new lappy with windows 7 premium and I'd like to see some examples of how people have their security set up before I go online.

Firewall, antivirus, malware, included software and any holes or options I need to tick.

    Thanks:)

    Hi Rikky

    Avast
    Spywareblaster
    PCtools Firewall
Malwarebytes free as backup malware scanner
Windows Defender (much better in Vista/Win7 than XP)

Update Windows and your apps always and safe surf and download.

Ooh, congrats Rikky!:cool I just run Avast, and with a router so no need for a 3rd party FW IMO. I haven't caught a thing since I started running W7 still in the RC stage. It's quite secure.:) However, depending on where you might like to go, perhaps a bit more paranoiacal response is needed. :-D

EDIT: OK, Halo has upped the paranoid level for me.:-D

Augie, I'm still mixed over the firewall thing and have PCtools on my laptop but not on my desktop or netbook, like you not caught anything but as Chaslang points out even with a NAT/SPI router its doesnt block outgoing traffic just incomming.

While the built in FW in Win7 is good, you have to create rules or adjust the allowed apps list, not as easy as an app to do this, I have no major worries about surfing with out a software firewall, but dont know everyones surfing habbits.

Hmm, I remember trying to create rules for Vista and failed miserably. I doubt I'd be any better in W7 either.:confused However PCTools blocked a benign app phoning home(folding@Stanford) without even asking me to do so that turned me off for a while even though I love ZA in all other respects. I spent a couple of days with that issue before killing it and my issue just went 'poof' into cyberspace.:)

    I guess it's time for a re-visit to ZA land. ;) I really loved that FW!:drool

Sadly ZA went downhill once Checkpoint took over, not an app I will re-visit personally anytime soon.

Worth giving this link a read to an article on Windows 7 Firewall and Rules by Pranav Thadeshwar HERE never gotten down to reading this fully yet and was to over the holidays and going through the steps, tempus fugit and all that.

Thanks for the link Halo as I will certainly give it a shot. Oh BTW, I remember Comodo beta really doing a number on my machine, like clicking 53 permissions boxes before I could get online?:eek I'm sure it has gotten better since then though I'm gun shy ATM.

My current W7 setup has been extremely stable since the beta and I'm sure you can see that I'm very wary of installing something that I know was bad. I don't do betas anymore like I used to eh?;) The Thrill is Gone.(B.B. King referance);):-D

So its pretty much business as usual, keep updated, decent firewall,AV,malware.

I'm just seeing how it runs with the inbuilt firewall I know its supposed to be better than years past,I will definitely be checking the custom rules page so thanks for that Halo.

Only got it this morning I just wanted see if there's anything I should be aware of before jacking into the matrix.

So I've updated, running inbuilt firewall ATM,I'll isntall antivirus shortly and win defender.

Main reason I got this was because it had a HDMI output for an LCD TV,won't be gaming or anything stressful, just a surfer and HD movie comp.

I'm still wondering if it will play full 1080p HD from the laptop to the TV,I shall soon find out.
