I'm wondering if I've been doing the firewall thing right all these years. I have a router that connects me to the internet. I've been told that the rounter has its own firewall. I'm just wondering if it's default setting is sufficiant or not. Also I'm running windows firewall. Should I be doing both?

    Thanks,

If your router has I firewall and you didn't set anything up then I suspect that it allows everything OUTBOUND and blocks everything INBOUND. You may not need the windows firewall if your router firewall is set up properly. You can run both...should be no problem.

Thanks for your input. I however am still concerned that it's not set up properly. I'm running an Dlink DIR 615 router if that helps. Again thanks for your help.

    Goodzwell :)

I took a look at the user manual for this device and the firewall capability seems very limited. You can set up a DMZ or control VPN access but not many other firewall settings are configurable. I would then assume that the device blocks all incoming traffic unless the selected protocol is port forwarded. That should be enough protection for home use, but if you want a real inexpensive firewall/router then get a ZyWall.

    Leave your Windows firewall enabled.

Thanks jconstan. I don't seem to be able to comprehand how these devices work. I've tried but I just don't understand a lot of how things work with routers. Thanks for your input. :)
