Houshold Desktop Infected

My sister said that the houshold desktop was "acting funny" and she was having trouble browsing the internet. Although many warnings about scripts popped up when logging on to the internet, I couldn't replicate the crashing and freezing problems she was having.

I thought I would do the Read and Run process anyways, and MAM found two trojans.

I had one problem: I couldn't get RootRepeal to work. When I tried to run it a warning popped up saying that the computer didn't have enough virtual memory and that it would try to free some up. I pressed OK and the computer froze. I had to force a shutdown. I tried again and the same thing happened, only this time when I rebooted, all the desktop icons were moved. Not sure what that means.

    Thanks for your help

Perhaps malware is not the problem; however you are scanning your user account not your sisters. Thus if your sister's account is the one having problems, it is the one the cleaning procedure should have been run on. You most likely will not find anything on her account either since the common areas are basically clean, but it is not impossible that something could show when booting her account.

Note that you do need to at least double the memory in this PC to properly support Windows XP and other software you are running.

OK. If I run the whole process again on her account is it OK to post those logs in this thread, or should I start a new one?

Yes, I do know the computer should have more memory, but it's only used for very basic tasks so it hasn't been a problem.

Yes since it is the same PC.

Okay but if the PC starts to slow down during startup, shutdown, or even normal operation or experiences instabilities like you are mentioning, it could be due to lack of memory. And also you need a proper firewall to be installed which is going to require additional memory.

I did the scan again on my sisters account, the logs are attached.

I had to redo the SAS scan because I forgot to change the scan settings, and RootRepeal did not work again.

Once this is finished and I install the recommended software, I'll see how the computer runs and decide about adding more memory.

Your logs are clean but you should do the below non-malware steps some of which may help improve startup time and overall performance.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Also do the below to optional remove a bunch of unnecessary startups.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PCMService] "C:\Program Files\Dell\Media Experience\PCMService.exe"

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RealTray] C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYER
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MMTray] C:\Program Files\MUSICMATCH\Musicmatch Jukebox\mm_tray.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe"
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [DellTransferAgent] "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Dell\TransferAgent\TransferAgent.exe"
    O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe
    O9 - Extra button: MUSICMATCH MX Web Player - {d81ca86b-ef63-42af-bee3-4502d9a03c2d} - http://wwws.musicmatch.com/mmz/openWebRadio.html (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

I did everything you listed while logged into my sisters account (I assume that's were I should have done those things?). It all worked fine. Is that it?

    Yes.

No! The below is it! ;)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

I performed all the steps on my sisters account without a hitch, but when I tried to uninstall Combofix from my account nothing happened. I tried a few times, but the Combofix icon is still on my desktop.
