We get those only once in a while too, pclover. They are scary when they actually hit. Glad it didn't hit around you.

News and people say it didn't touch down. I guess they just issued it as a precaution. At the time I could see strong cells on the radar.

Yep. Generally in areas that don't get them often you'll have horrible winds and a thunderstorm. They can be damaging too.

Been through one of those. Sounds like a locamotive in the sky above. Although that was in the spring of '74, I'll never forget it. Here is WI, every few years we get hit with a big one, wiping out some small village.
Course, nowhere near as bad as kansas. Just look what happened to Dorothy!

Me being from the UK an all, and never had the experience of anything like that, i want to know whats the difference between a tornado and a hurricane, is one stronger then the other or something ?

Hurricanes are huge but with winds going upto around 150 MPH, tornadoes are relatively small in comparison but they can carry double the wind speed in a tight circular pattern of a 100 feet to half a mile in diameter! Just about everything a tornado hits is destroyed.

OH ! I think we had a hurricane here in the UK a few year ago, no where near where i live like, it was further down south, it ripped a few house roofs of and tore a few trees out of the ground, but no one was killed, i don't think, i've only ever seen tornadoes on the discovery channel, and they don't mess about like do they, they take whole towns out, and thats mental, weather !

Also, hurricanes typically hit coastal areas the hardest. In other words, inland states in the U.S. do not receive the brunt of hurricanes because they are far away from the coastline. Tornadoes, on the other hand, are more common in inland areas. Here in my home state of Ohio, we experience tornadoes but do not get the brunt of hurricanes. If a hurricane hits the east coast, we may get some residual effects from it, such as high winds and rain but we won't, of course, get the devastation that can be caused by ocean waves on the coastline and wind velocity will have somewhat dissipated from what it is at the coastline.

I remember a tornado when I lived in Prunedale taking out some fence and killing a cow or two in Moss Landing.

There were 2 here, 1 in East Ventura a blk or so from where we lived at one time and 1 in Santa Barbara.

So we get them now and then but not 4 miles wide. :eek
