I am running vista with 4gb ram and want to speed up my startup and shut down, any suggestions? Also, if I were to start an IRC Channel, would anyone here use it? Wouldn't care much to be wasting my time on it lol! :major

If you want to speed up your startup and shutdown, you need to use msconfig to reduce the amount of programs you have starting on boot !

Alternatively you can change the boot mode in your " bios " to quick boot mode then make your priority boot your HDD, but the catch with this is, you can't boot from CD, unless you change the bios setting back again !

    Hope you understood that !

    Rusty ! ;)

Downloaded the program and tried the setup, says it will not work with windows vista, only up to xp so far :( Thank you for trying, I just going to re-enable defender.

Download WinPatrol 2010 from BillP Studios. It will allow you to control startup items in Vista. http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html
It is free. You can later chose to update to the paid Pro version or remain with the free version.

So far winpatrol seems to be doing exactly what I need, just playing with it now to figure it out. Pretty self explanitory. It seems tho that my speedup and shutdown are still taking forever. Any advice?:yum

I always remove SunJavaUpdatedSched because I prefer to do my own updates rather than have Sun Java wasting time checking to see if there are any.
You can stop AdobeReaderSpeedLauncher; in fact, I've removed Adobe Reader and replaced it with Foxit. Adobe Reader has too many security holes and is much too bloated.
There are a few much leaner pdf readers: Sumatra and Foxit.

    I found this on AdobeARM
Since I don't have AdobeReader, I don't have this on my computers.

I will have to do more looking to discover what some of the other entries are.

Syntpenh is part of your Synaptics touchpad so let it alone
ICECHAT is an IRC client. I have no idea if that needs to run at startup

**** from searching, it appears that Groove GFS Stub Execution might be malware.

    My advice, start here:
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407
and go through the steps, download the MG Tools and then run the programs. When you have the logs, post a new thread here
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=35

Be patient. It takes between 1 and 5 days for a malware fighter to read through your logs and tell you what you need to do to clean up your computer. It is worth the wait because your computer will be cleaned and chances are your Vista will be running a lot smoother.

Hi what app is this you are trying to link to Vista, if its StartupCPL then use the standalone version as the installable version has problems with UAC, download the zip and unzip it and then just run.

Groove GFS Stub Execution will be legit if you have Office Groove installed as its likely to be the BHO object to allow you right click add, and integration with IE, to be honest I delete it from startup.

Icechat can be disabled as you can start it manually when you need it.

AdobeReaderSpeedLauncher and AdobeARM can both be disabled.

Webcheck, does this one have a path to its location at all? as it could be anything from malware to an innocent updater for an app that can be disabled.

I not sure what webcheck is linked to, winpatrol picked it up as a secret startup item.:confused

Does webcheck show up as a .exe in task manager?

I dont use WinPatrol, but does it give you a path to its location? if not then if you have CCleaner on your PC, open it and click Tools > Startup and what does it say under File listing for its path?

I would disable it and see if anything cries out for it to be enabled again, most likely its just an updater for something.

I not finding any path to it, ccleaner is not picking it up and it is not showing in the task manager or the services screens.:major

    How long?
    Also go through this:
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=106650

And check your HD for errors.
Right click My Comp>> Open>> Right click Local(C)>> Properties>> Tools>> check Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. Reboot..
    Cheers..
